Biography

WELLWATER CONSPIRACY are comprised of ex-MONSTER MAGNET guitarist JOHN McBAIN and former PEARL JAM and SOUNDGARDEN man Matt Cameron. Both men were also involved with HATER. The band would be fronted by Ben Shepherd, another SOUNDGARDEN veteran. WELLWATER CONSPIRACY emerged with a set of low key 1993 7” singles whose sleeve credits identified John McBain as being joined by vocalist 'Zeb' and drummer 'Tad Dameron', both SOUNDGARDEN members having to remain anonymous due to contract. A free single dubbed 'A Metal Creep's Portico', a split release with Swedish band THE ROTS OF ECHO, would be issued with the September 1995 Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine.

The triumvirate opted for an almost mellowed out, Psychedelic direction on their 1997 debut 'A Declaration Of Conformity', even going so far as to cover SYD BARRETT's 'Lucy Leave' and THE SPIDERS 'Nati Bati Yi'.

Shepherd opted out by the time of the 'Brotherhood Of Electric' opus. The 1999 album saw Cameron taking the main vocal role with Josh Homme of KYUSS and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE guesting alongside Glenn Slater of THE WALKABOUTS. Although still firmly planted in the 60s the record did please fans of the members priority acts by including the Sabbathian riff factory of 'Van Vanishing'.

Cameron had re-joined PEARL JAM by the close of the millennium, however WELLWATER CONSPIRACY, complete with Ben Shepherd once again, did return for a third album 'The Scroll And Its Combinations'. The track 'C, Myself And Eye' featured a guesting Kim Thayil of SOUNDGARDEN donating a trademark guitar solo whilst 'Felicity's Surprise' is embellished by the distinctive tomes of one 'Wes C. Addle' (Actually PEARL JAM's Eddie Vedder). For live gigs the esteemed producer and ex-SKINYARD member Jack Endino would join the band on bass with Glen Slater on keyboards.

JOHN McBAIN issued the solo album 'The In-Flight Feature' through Duna Records in February 2006.
