Biography
Although Washington D.C. Punk act WOOL's career was brief it would prove to be of high significance in fostering the Grunge ethos that was about to sweep North America. The group members, assembled in the early nineties, were all veterans of the local underground music scene. WOOL's sibling main men Pete and Franz Stahl were both members of SCREAM, the band that also gave Dave Grohl to NIRVANA and Gee to THE OBSESSED. Vocalist Al Bloch, sibling of THE FASTBACKS Kurt Bloch, is ex-CONCRETE BLONDE, THE BOMBARDIERS, THE CHEATERS and WENIS whilst drummer Peter Moffett had previously been active with GOVERNMENT ISSUE.
WOOL first proffered the 1992 EP 'Budspawn' for the External imprint, this effort immediately setting the band a few paces beyond the standard Punk format by injecting a healthy dose of Psychedelia into the proceedings. A line up change found Chris Bratton of Seattle's DRIVE LIKE JEHU, taking the drum position as WOOL signed to the major London label for 1994's 'Box Set', included in which was the GREGG ALLMAN Martin Luther King themed 'God Rest His Soul'. Despite garnering respect in the music press and betraying overt Pop leanings the record made no impression on the national charts. The following year a disillusioned WOOL folded.
The Stahl brothers, Grohl and Gee reformed SCREAM for a one off gig at the launch party for WOOL's 1994 album 'Box Set'.
Franz Stahl joined Dave Grohl's FOO FIGHTERS, supplanting Pat Smear. Bloch formed MY FAVOURITE MARTIAN with ex-SUCKERPUNCH and STEVE JONES band guitarist Mike Dimkitch, latterly of THE CULT. Ex-WOOL drummer Peter Moffett had re-surfaced as a member of BURNING AIRLINES in 1997.
