Despite making their major label breakthrough with the Nemperor RCA 'In The Light' album in 1986, TOBY REDD actually first got together in 1975.

unusual band name was derived from a children's story titled 'Toby The Horse'. The story details Toby's adventures after becoming red in colour after stepping into a bucket of paint intended for use on a barn.

Guitarist Tony Cutino and bassist Dennis Martz were the individuals who first put the group together in high school Vocalist Dennis Backos would join the pair in 1979, whilst drummer Chad Smith (Chadwick Gaylord Smith), ex-PHAROAH, arrived on the scene in 1983. After following the usual route of being included on a variety of local radio station sponsored compilation albums, TOBY REDD debuted with the independently released 'A To Z' on the Plastic label in 1982.

TOBY REDD had been planning to release a second album the independent way before a tape of some of the band's latest songs was picked up by the right people at Nemporor Records and the Michigan based quartet were duly signed. Drummer Chad Smith was to find fame with RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS in 1989.
