Biography

Having carved out an excellent reputation for himself both as a session player and as a member of TOTO guitarist Steve Lukather turned his attention to a solo career. His first album only appeared to be released in Europe, despite the attraction of tracks co-produced, written and guested on by none other than VAN HALEN's Eddie Van Halen. The album also features contributions from Prairie Prince of THE TUBES, Warren Ham, Steve Stevens, Jan Hammer, JOURNEY's Randy Jackson, MICHAEL LANDAU, KING OF HEARTS vocalist Tommy Funderburk, RICHARD MARX, Thommy Price, ex-CHOPPER keyboard player Kim Bullard and bassist Leland Sklar. Also involved were TOTO colleagues David Paich and Jeff Porcaro.

Whilst his work in TOTO and continued sessioneering took priority in the interim period Lukather re-emerged as a solo artist in 1994 with 'Candyman'. This record was primarily the fruits of recording with his new side band LOS LOBOTOMYS, which began life as a bunch of friends jamming until things progressed to something a little more serious. The album had been recorded over the course of a year and recorded live with the minimum of overdubbing. Contributors were ex-FREE and BAD COMPANY vocalist PAUL RODGERS, BRYAN ADAMS drummer Mickey Curry and Fee Waybill.

Having played in Britain with PAUL RODGERS earlier in the year, Lukather toured in Britain again during June '94 with LOS LOBOTOMYS, the band also featuring John Pena, bassist David Garfield and veteran session drummer Simon Phillips.

Lukather released his third solo album, 'Luke', in the summer of 1997, visiting Britain for a one-off show in London. His backing group consisting of the former DAVID LEE ROTH band duo of keyboard player Brett Tuggle and drummer Greg Bisonette plus erstwhile WILDLIFE, ROBIN GEORGE, OZZY OSBOURNE, VINCE NEIL and BEGGARS & THIEVES bassist Phil Soussan.

In 1999 the man would figure as guest on the 'Deep' album issued by BILLY SHEEHAN's Jazz Rock trio NIACIN. 2001 found no let up in Lukather's work ethic. The guitarist issued a Jazz Rock album 'No Substitutions', recorded in Osaka, Japan, in collaboration with Larry Carlton. Besides gigs with Carlton, Lukather put in live shows with TOTO and his live side project DOVES OF FIRE. Other activity would see the six-stringer paying homage at a Dutch JIMI HENDRIX festival in July and appearing on records by MARI LIJIMA, ROBIN DIMAGGIO and FISH.

Lukather, besides a whole catalogue of Pop and Country sessions, has donated his services to artists such as ASIA, AMERICA, CHER, CHICAGO's 'Chicago 16', ERIC CLAPTON, ALICE COOPER's 'Trash', GREG LAKE, PETER FRAMPTON, STEALIN' HORSES, STEVIE NICKS's 'Wild Heart' record and even as studio guitarist and arranger for SPINAL TAP. His presence would also be felt on DEREK SHERINIAN's 2001 opus 'Rhapsody In Black'.

Lukather's band stepped up for a memorable performance at the Los Angeles Key club on April 29th 2002 in honour of the late OZZY OSBOURNE / MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Randy Castillo. Lukather's band for the evening not only included Castillo's erstwhile Ozzy bass partner Phil Soussan but the twin powerhouse drumming of both Kenny Aaronoff and Simon Phillips. Following recording of the TOTO covers album Lukather got to grips with a new, seasonal studio solo record dubbed 'Santamental'. Initial reports revealed a whole host of guest star contributions including the likes of Gregg Bissonette, STEVE VAI, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, EDGAR WINTER, Simon Phillips, Scott Hamilton and Lenny Castro.

In April of 2004 Lukather contributed backing vocals to new material being recorded by the reformed VAN HALEN for inclusion on their 'Best Of Volume II' opus. Upon conclusion of sessions for a new TOTO album, Lukather assembled a live band for solo work across Europe in November 2005, this unit comprising bassist Oskar Cartaya, keyboard player Steve Weingart with Joey Heredia on drums.

Lukather, singer Rob Halford of JUDAS PRIEST, Jason Bonham, guitarist SLASH of GUNS N' ROSES, and KEITH EMERSON performed as an "all star" band at the 95.5 KLOS Mark And Brian Christmas Show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday 16th December 16.
