Put together in 1993 by the brothers of the late MOTHER LOVE BONE frontman Andrew Wood. Both Brian and Kevin Wood were previously with the 1992 band FIRE ANTS. Guitarist John McBain was originally with New York's MONSTER MAGNET whilst bassist John Waterman has credits with 600 SCHOOL and EPISODE, his colleague in both bands being future SOUNDGARDEN man Ben Shepard.

McBain, Waterman and Brian Wood were also in the employ of Ben Shepard's HATER during this same time frame.

DEVILHEAD entered a period of flux in 1995 with Waterman, Kimble and McBain decamping. New fixtures were guitarist Tim Young, SATCHEL bassist Cory Kane and drummer Mike Stone.

Ben Shepard joined the band in 1997.
