Biography
A five-piece Metal band from Scottsdale, Arizona. SURGICAL STEEL, founded in 1980 and at first fronted by Harley Van Kirk, contributed the demo track 'Rivet Head' to the 'Metal Massacre II' compilation album on Metal Blade. Prior to SURGICAL STEEL Harley Van Kirk, in alliance with JEFF MARTIN on drums, Greg Chaisson and guitarists Jim McMellen and Henry Erman had been operational as ST. MICHAEL. Bass player GREG CHAISSON, having also been a member of GHOST RIDE previously, would be superseded by Mark Lehman during 1982, an erstwhile member of ROCK CANDY.
The band introduced second guitarist Paul Kosanovich in 1984. Further demos that year were produced by JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Rob Halford, the famous benefactor even gracing the track 'Smooth And Fast' with his vocal presence. Another guesting participant would be ICON guitarist Dan Wexler. SURGICAL STEEL would never break out of Arizona, their nearest claim to national fame coming with a cameo inclusion in the low budget 1985 Roger Wilson and Leif Garrett movie 'Thunder Alley'. In 1986 SURGICAL STEEL were briefly joined by former W.A.S.P., STEELER and SIN bassist Rik Fox. Also positioned on bass at one stage was ex-COUNTER ATTACK man Ian Mayo, later of HURRICANE ALICE.
With the demise of SURGICAL STEEL Harley van Kirk forged METAL BEAST in 1996, subsequently creating SAINT, this latter unit lasting until 2000. Jeff Martin later joined RACER X before teaming up with BADLANDS in a drumming capacity where he was re-united with ex-SURGICAL STEEL bandmate Greg Chaisson. The bass player, having journeyed through STEELER, DIE HAPPY, LEGS DIAMOND, RED SEA and BRITTON, subsequently enjoyed a very brief tenure with the OZZY OSBOURNE band. Chaisson would cut a solo Christian Rock album in 1995 entitled 'It's About Time'. Martin renewed the connection with Rob Halford by appearing as an unaccredited backing vocalist on the JUDAS PRIEST 'Turbo' album, featuring on the track ''Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days'. In latter years Jeff Martin was active as singer for a resurrected RACER X and drummer for UFO, the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP and GEORGE LYNCH.
Lehman and ex-SURGICAL STEEL drummer Bob Milan subsequently performed with former FLEETWOOD MAC star Bob Welch. He would also feature on the 2003 SCHUGAR/SCHENKER album 'Under Construction' and be found pursuing a new Hard Rock act entitled MFM. Meantime former singer Harley van Kirk issued a challanging, Christian concept album 'The New Messiah' during 2004 accredited to MESSIAH'S REIGN.
JEFF MARTIN issued his debut solo album, 'Fool', in April 2006. SURGICAL STEEL reunited to perform to benefit Arizona Animal Welfare League, SPCA other animal non-profits including Arizona Adopt-a-Greyhound and Payson Humane Society. during 2008.
