Biography

So-Cal San Diego Skate Punks BLINK-182 would burst into the mainstream Pop arena courtesy of their MCA debut 'Enema Of The State' and a collection of quirky hit singles such as 'What's My Age Again?' and 'All The Small Things' backed by oddball videos in which the band would often perform naked. Convened originally as BLINK in 1993, although apparently the band had put in wedding performances billed as EL CUATRO & THE CAJONES, the trio initially comprised of vocalist / guitarist Tom DeLonge, bassist Mark Hoppus and drummer Scott Raynor. This unit debuted with the 1993 self financed EP 'Fly Swatter'.

The 1994 'Buddha' album, issued by the Kung Fu label, would include a cover of WEAZEL's 'Girl Next Door'. Still as BLINK the band cut the 'Cheshire Cat' album for the quaintly titled Grilled Cheese label but then ran into problems when an Irish act laying prior rights to the BLINK title forced their claim. The band duly evolved into BLINK-182 scoring valuable media coverage with their part in the 1996 Vans Warped tour and 1997's 'Dude Ranch' album. BLINK-182 subsequently signed up to major label MCA Records. At this juncture Raynor was let go and replaced by Travis Barker, previously a member of THE AQUANAUTS. BLINK-182's major label debut, 1999's 'Enema Of The State', would go on to top the 4 million sales mark as the band dominated MTV screens with a run of comic videos generally involving dwarfs and nakedness. Maintaining their momentum BLINK-182 released the live 'The Mark, Tom & Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back)' which included the new track, and next hit single, 'Man Overboard'.

The 'Take Your Pants Off And Jacket' album witnessed a return to the band's earlier, rawer approach. The band would hook up with GREEN DAY for the 2002 'Pop Disaster' tour of America commencing in Bakersfield, California on April 17th and closing in Minneapolis on June 17th. Support acts JIMMY EAT WORLD took on opening duties for the first portion of the trek with SAVES THE DAY taking over the latter half.

A side venture of Travis Barker transpired in early 2002 as Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman of RANCID united with the drummer to found THE TRANSPLANTS, recording an album for the Hellcat label.

The band set about touring Australian March of 2004 but had to cancel shows at the Perth 'Rock It' festival, Sydney and Brisbane following an accident in Melbourne when drummer Travis Barker broke his foot getting off a bus. Barker, with his leg in a plaster cast, returned to action for the band's Adelaide show. BLINK-182's April North American shows saw support coming from CYPRESS HILL, Punk band THE USED and Hardcore merchants TAKING BACK SUNDAY.

The band surprised fans in February of 2005 by folding, announcing "For over a decade, BLINK-182 has toured, recorded and promoted non-stop all while trying to balance relationships with family and friends. To that end, the band has decided to go on an indefinite hiatus to spend some time enjoying the fruits of their labors with loved ones". The band had abruptly withdrew from a scheduled appearance at the 'Music for Relief: Rebuilding South Asia' tsunami benefit concert in California just days before.
