Biography

One of the forerunners of America's mid 90's 'Nu-Punk' genre. The act was formed in Rodeo, California as a school band SWEET CHILDREN with frontman Billy Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt (real name Mike Pritchard) yet to hit their teens by the time of their first musical union. GREEN DAY's original drummer Al Sobrante (real name John Kiftmeyer) was ousted by the more familiar face of Tre Cool (real name Frank Edwin Wright III) in 1990.

Armstrong and Dirnt's first act SWEET CHILDREN included Billy Joe's sister Ana on drums. Recordings from this era would re-emerge as part of the re-release of GREEN DAY's second album 'Kerplunk!' in 1994. Billy Joe Armstrong also spent a term with PINHEAD GUNPOWDER featuring on their 'Jump Salty' album. Armstrong also joined rising Punk compatriots RANCID- for one day!

In keeping with the Punk ethic the debut album '39- Smooth' was apparently recorded in less than 24 hours. It would sell more than 30'000 copies and gave rise to Dirnt opting to leave school just befoire his 18 birthday to fully concentrate on the band.

The 'Kerplunk!' album matched the debut's sales and found GREEN DAY on extensive touring expeditions across America. The buzz on the band and the exceptional sales for such a young act prompted a record company bidding frenzy with Warner Bros. winning out at the end of the day.

GREEN DAY's rise to mass acceptance in America was swift when the video for 'Basket Case' became a firm MTV favourite. The accompanying album 'Dookie' went multi platinum eventually peaking at number 2 in the Billboard charts. The record also garnered a prestigious Grammy award, GREEN DAY winning the 'Best alternative music performance' category.

The 1995 follow up 'Insomniac' echoed its predecessor's chart achievements just being held off the number one spot. However, with 'Dookie's sales pushing past 8 million 'Insomniac's sales soon started to wane.

During 1998 GREEN DAY recorded a version of 'Judy Jetson' with DARLINGTON for the latter's 'Girltroversy' album.

The band would hook up with BLINK-182 for the 2002 'Pop Disaster' tour of America commencing in Bakersfield, California on April 17th and closing in Minneapolis on June 17th. Support acts JIMMY EAT WORLD took on opening duties for the first portion of the trek with SAVES THE DAY taking over the latter half. Other studio activity found the band appearing amongst a genuine all star cast donating their take of 'Outsider' to the 2002 Joey Ramone and ROB ZOMBIE assembled RAMONES tribute album 'We're A Happy Family'. The RAMONES track would also appear on GREEN DAY's July album 'Shenanigans', a collection of Rarities, covers and B sides. Featured would be the previously unreleased song 'DUI' and a cover version of the KINKS 'Tired Of Waiting For You'.
