Biography
A Southern flavoured AOR act of some repute. DUKE JUPITER, hailing from Rochester, New York, debuted in 1978 with the 'Sweet Cheeks' album produced by veteran session keyboard player and THE ALLMAN BROTHERS member Chuck Leavell. This album, recorded at the legendary Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia and including contributions from the equally illustrious Muscle Shoals Horn section, found the band with a line up of vocalist / guitarist Greg Walker, guitarist Don Maracle, bassist George Barajas, keyboard player Marshall Styler and drummer Earl Jetty.
Jetty lost his position for 1979's Glen Kolotkin produced 'Taste The Night', David Hanlon taking over on drums. The group's third album for Mercury records, 'Band In Blue', saw production duties going out to BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS guitarist Steve Katz.
DUKE JUPTER returned in 1982 with a deal from the CBS affiliated Coast To Coast label, releasing the somewhat R&B flavoured and oddly titled 'Duke Jupter 1' in 1982. For this outing, utilising Glen Kolotkin as producer once again in 1982, core members Marshall, Greg, and Goeorge trimmed the group back to a quartet featuring Dave Corcoran on drums. George Barajas had become terminally ill with a brain tumor and was only able to play bass on some of the tracks. Rickey Ellis was brought on board to take George's place as bassist. DUKE JUPITER scored a sizable success with this album, the single 'I'll Drink To You' even landing them a Billboard top 20 single. In June of 1982 the group performed their biggest headline concert with a show at Ontario Beach Park as a previously estimated 5'000 swelled to over 25'000.
The 'You Make It Look Easy' album of 1983 would be produced by Ashley Howe. The record found the band with a revised line up once again of Walker, Styler, Corcoran with Rickey Ellis as a permanent member. Although the tracks 'This is Japan' and 'I'm Available' performed well at radio the album failed to match the sales of its predecessor. However, the group signed to Motown's Morocco Rock label for 1984's 'White Knuckle Ride' with Glen Kolotkin back behind the desk. He was retained for 'The Line Of Your Fire' album the following year although this record was to see issue on the Motown label itself. With no real promotion afforded the band, DUKE JUPITER called it a day in 1986.
On 28th July 2002 DUKE JUPITER performed live for the first time in eight years at a benefit show for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's New York branch Branch at the Finger Lakes Performing Art Center in Upstate New York.
