Biography

RAGING SLAB was one of the very first acts unafraid to blend Southern Boogie with Punk and Metal. RAGING SLAB was formed in 1983 by vocalist / guitarist Greg Strzempka (a.k.a. 'Jagory Slab') after he moved to New York's lower East side from Washington D.C., although he was originally from Western Pennsylvania.

The initial RAGING SLAB formation found Strzempka joined by slide guitarist Elyse Steinman, second guitarist Dimitri Brill (better known as DJ Dimitri from Pop act DEELITE) and drummer Kory Clarke. The latter of course would subsequently go onto to famously front WARRIOR SOUL. This first version of the band cut their teeth with an inaugural gig at the renowned lower East side venue 8-BC.

RAGING SLAB debuted in 1986 with the 'Slabbage' album. The 'Assmaster' album on Buy Our Records followed. The album came complete with a comic book penned by Marvel Comics artist Pat Redding detailing the exploits of the band created 'Assmaster' character. At this point the group, having been through a succession of line up changes, were a four-piece comprised of Jagory Slab, Elyse Steinman, bassist Alec Morton and drummer Tim Finefrock.

Since inception RAGING SLAB has been through a succession of drummers. Included being Kenny Kness on the 'True Death' mini-album (who also played with a later line-up of the former RCA signed AVIATOR) and former WHIPLASH and SLAYER man T.J. Scaglione and SAVATAGE's Steve Wacholz on 1989's eponymous effort for RCA Records. Their place for live work was taken by Bob Pantella.

The self-titled 1989 album also saw the introduction of guitarist Mark Middleton and included two tracks previously on the 'True Death' EP, namely 'Get Off My Jollies' and 'Shiny Mama'. Guests included BADLANDS and former BLACK SABBATH vocalist RAY GILLEN. RAGING SLAB had initially been signed to RCA Records purely on a demo deal in December 1988 but as the project progressed the label offered the band a an album deal that immediately led to them being placed in the studio. The album, produced by SHRAPNEL guitarist Daniel Rey, fared well on the sales front with exposure to the band being boosted by heavy MTV rotation of the video 'Don't Dog Me'.

In 1989 RAGING SLAB was joined by former GENOCIDE, MISFITS, ANGELS IN VAIN and PRINCESS PANG drummer Brain 'Damage' Keats. The journeyman drummer would later join DOPPLER, THE FUZZTONES and TRAMDRIVER. During 1990 the band toured heavily supporting a diverse range of acts such as WARRANT, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, MOLLY HATCHET and the RAMONES. With live work completed the band purchased a farmstead in Pennsylvania, equipping it with a home studio and set to work on the follow up album with producer Alex Perialis. Intended to be entitled 'From A Southern Space' the resulting album was blocked by RCA Records as unsatisfactory and tapes were shelved.

RAGING SLAB maintained momentum by guesting for GUNS N' ROSES before a return to the studio. These sessions culminated in the album 'Freeburden', overseen by producer Michael Bienhorn. Drums for this set of recordings were handled by Jack Irons of RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and PEARL JAM repute. The band would be left reeling when RCA once again rejected the material and refused to release it.

Rick Rubin's Def Jam label weighed in during 1992 to buy the band out of their RCA deal, swiftly ensconcing the band in the studio once again. The 'Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert' saw production from the esteemed Brendan O'Brien and benefitted from string arrangements courtesy of JOHN PAUL JONES of LED ZEPPELIN. Issued in 1993 the album made a sizable impact with a video for the track 'Anywhere But Here' being debuted on MTV's spoof cartoon show 'Beavis & Butthead'.

By 1994 Paul Sheehan was on the drum stool as RAGING SLAB toured Europe as support to Pop Rockers TEXAS. Other shows had the band acting as openers to MONSTER MAGNET and LENNY KRAVITZ. However, during British shows RAGING SLAB's misfortune when it came to drummers reared its head again when Sheehan suffered an extreme knee injury which put him out of action. Greg Strzempka would aid fellow Southern Stoners FIVE HORSE JOHNSON, acting as producer for their 'Double Down' album.

1995 would be another trying year for the band. In a repeat of their RCA experience a projected album 'Black Belt In Boogie' was shelved by Rick Rubin. Disillusioned, guitarist Mark Middleton decamped. RAGING SLAB cut another album, 'Sing Monkey Sing', which was released with little fanfare during 1996. Rubin's record label wound up operations and RAGING SLAB would be left high and dry once more, unable to release new product until the year 2000 due to the nature of their contract with their former label.

In 1999 the group set to work on a fresh studio album, initially employing drummer Phil Ondich. Their latest recruit would opt out to join BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and Dale Crover of the MELVINS stepped in. although Crover performed some live dates with RAGING SLAB he too would make an exit, the band finally settling on TIDY and MONO PUFF sticksman Rob Cournoyer. As soon as the contractual chains were lifted RAGING SLAB set to work affirming their continued existence donating a cover of MOUNTAIN's 'Mississippi Queen' for 'In The Groove' tribute album, AEROSMITH's 'Bone To Bone' for the Small Stone Recordings 'Right In The Nuts ' collection and 'Pole Cat Woman' to the Underdogma label's 'Judge Not..' compilation.

Signing to Stoner indie label Tee Pee Records RAGING SLAB issued 'The Dealer', soon embarking upon North American gigs dubbed the 'Rulin' The Roost' tour. The band's projected 2001 European tour would fall victim to the September terrorist attacks, the band's original scheduled flight due to leave from Pittsburgh to Holland on September 11th.

RAGING SLAB would be back in September 2002 with a new album, the wryly entitled 'Raging Slab (Pronounced 'Eat Shit'). Included would be the track 'Ruby' in dedication to the late, great RUBY STARR. The album would be promoted with a lengthy series of European, UK and Scandinavian dates. Drummer Bob Pantella united with the acclaimed MONSTER MAGNET in December of 2003.

March of 2004 saw the announcement that personnel from Swedish Blues Stoners BACKDRAFT had joined in collaboration with RAGING SLAB frontman Greg Strzempka to found a new band unit entitled ODIN GRANGE. In November RAGING SLAB undertook a lengthy tour of Europe and Scandinavia, citing a band line up comprising Greg Strzempka, Elyse Steinman, bassist Mats Rydström and drummer Niklas Matsson, both from BACKDRAFT and KILLER BEE. The band ensconsed themselves in the studio during November 2005 to craft a new album.
