PROBOT is the retro Metal side endeavour of the high profile NIRVANA and FOO FIGHTERS credited Dave Grohl. Aiding him in this project, commencing in 2001, would be erstwhile ZWAN guitarist Matt Sweeney and FOO FIGHTERS producer Adam Kasper. The venture was rooted in two old school style songs Grohl had submitted, but rejected, for OZZY OSBOURNE, 'Sweet Dreams' and 'My Tortured Soul'. Rounding up a host of esteemed Metal veterans Grohl's vision soon culminated in a much anticipated album. Amongst those participating included VOIVOD's Snake on 'Dictatorsaurus', CORROSION OF CONFORMITY's Mike Dean on 'Access Babylon', KING DIAMOND on 'Sweet Dreams', CATHEDRAL's Lee Dorrian with Ice Cold Man, CELTIC FROST mainman Thomas G. Fischer on 'Big Sky' and TROUBLE's Eric Wagner appearing on 'My Tortured Soul'. Even VOIVOD's Away lent the whole package 80's credibility by drafting the album artwork in his own distinctive style. One early candidate, UNLEASHED frontman Johnny Hedlund, was apparently ruled out due to "questionable politics", despite vehement denials from the man himself. Interestingly, the song 'Access Babylon' would also appear on the ALEC EMPIRE album 'Intelligence & Sacrifice', apparently after it had been mooted as a proposed collaboration between Grohl and the ex-ATARI TEENAGE RIOT man then forgotten.

First promotional video for the PROBOT album, 'Shake Your Blood', not only featured guest singer LEMMY from MOTȪRHEAD but also the Suicide Girls burlesque troupe. Preceding the February 2004 album launch would be the single 'Centuries Of Sin', fronted up by CRONOS of VENOM and limited to 6'666 copies. B side 'Emerald Lies' saw guest vocals from Doom legend Wino of ST. VITUS, THE OBSESSED, SPIRIT CARAVAN and PLACE OF SKULLS tradition. PROBOT put in a one off live performance of 'My Tortured Soul' on 28th January at the MTV studios in New York City. Joining Grohl for the occasion would be vocalist Eric Wagner of TROUBLE, ex-THE OBSESSED, ST. VITUS, SPIRIT CARAVAN guitarist Wino, Greg Anderson of THORR'S HAMMER, GOATSNAKE, SUNN 0))) and owner of Southern Lord Records and FOO FIGHTERS mixer Nick Raskulinecz.

The 'Probot' album shifted just over 27,000 copies in its first week of US sales to land at no. 68 in the Billboard album charts.
