Biography

Formed by ex-BLIND ILLUSION bassist Les Claypool and former Thrasher, ex-BLIZZARD, POSSESSED and BLIND ILLUSION guitarist Larry LaLonde. Claypool had been a member of PRIMATE releasing the 1989 album 'Suck This'. When PRIMATE guitarist Todd Huth departed to BLIND ILLUSION LaLonde decamped from the very same act to fill the position in the band now titled PRIMUS. In creating the quirky Funk laden crossover style of PRIMUS, guitarist Larry LaLonde made a drastic change of tack from arch Death metallers POSSESSED.

FAITH NO MORE drummer Mike Bordin guests on the 1991 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese' album. PRIMUS, rapidly fostering cult appeal, also scored the valuable guest slot opening for RUSH's American dates. PRIMUS co-headlined the 1993 Lollapalooza trek with ALICE IN CHAINS.

Claypool took a diversion in 1994 to renew his union with Jay Lane and Todd Huth to release an album 'Riddles Are Abound Tonight' credited to SAUSAGE. 1996 found Claypool contributing to RUSH guitarist ALEX LIFESON's debut solo effort 'Victor'.

1997's 'The Brown Album' was recorded using vintage analog equipment and was also released in limited edition vinyl format as a double set.

PRIMUS scored quite a coup in 1998 when they penned the theme music for the hugely successful adult cartoon 'South Park'. Alexander had set up a side project act ATTENTION DEFICIT working in collusion with TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick.

2000's 'Antiop' album saw PRIMUS working with a plethora of special guests with production being handled by Stewart Copeland of THE POLICE and Fred Durst of LIMP BIZKIT. The track 'Eclectic Electric' featured METALLICA's James Hetfield and ex FAITH NO MORE man JIM MARTIN.

PRIMUS, with guest OZZY OSBOURNE, contributed 'N.I.B.' to the BLACK SABBATH tribute album 'Nativity In Black 2'.

The band took on the ex-PRAXIS duo of mysterious Jazz Rock guitarist 'Buckethead' in 2000 and drummer Brain (real name Bryan Mantia). The former always wore an upside Kentucky fried chicken box on his head onstage to conceal his identity! As the year closed it was revealed that Tim Alexander was back on drums and that both Brain and Buckethead had joined Axl Rose's new incarnation of GUNS N' ROSES.

In 2001 Claypool emerged fronting a new act entitled OYSTERHEAD comprising of former POLICE drummer Stewart Copeland and PHISH guitarist Trey Anastasion. Yet another new Claypool led combo, THE LES CLAYPOOL FROG BRIGADE featuring former PRIMUS drummer Tim Alexander, issued their debut album 'The Les Claypool Frog Brigade Presents Purple Onion' in September of 2002 leading up to the release with June / July North American club dates.

Les Claypool would collaborate on a new musical venture with ADRIAN BELEW of KING CRIMSON and TOOL drummer Danny Carey in January of 2003. By August of that year it was revealed that the original band line up of vocalist / bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry "Ler" Lalonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander had reformed PRIMUS recording five new songs for an October DVD collection 'Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People'. The comeback 'Tour de Fromage' dates, commencing 17th October at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, California, would include the 1991 album 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese' in its entirety.

LES CLAYPOOL & HIS FANCY BAND toured throughout North America in June and July 2007 backed by TWO GALLANTS.
