Biography
Post Grunge, Pop edged Alt-Rock act EVERCLEAR gained a notoriety for crafting superb radio friendly rockers. The group is centred upon Los Angeles native Art (Arthur Paul) Alexakis, a former frontman for San Francisco act COLORFINGER. At this early stage in his career Alexakis had already suffered the rigours of drug addiction, shedding his own habit following the tragic loss from overdoses of both his brother George and girlfriend. His childhood had been marred by problems, after surviving an attempted suicide attempt, jumping off the Santa Monica pier, Alexakis served terms in correctional facilities for burglary, possession, assault and dealing.
Alexakis' first forays into the world of music came with the groups SHAKIN' BRAVES and Country Punks THE EASY HOES. His involvement in the local San Francisco scene extended to his instigation of a compilation album 'Lazy, Loud, & Liquor'd Up', this featuring both THE EASY HOES and his next act COLORFINGER. Although COLORFINGER issued product, the 'Deep In The Heart Of The Beast In The Sun' album, through Alexakis' own Shindig label the collapse of distributor Rough Trade stalled momentum.
The pregnancy of his girlfriend forced a relocation to Portland, Oregon in 1992. Alexakis forged EVERCLEAR in league with ex-SOUL HAMMER bass player Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert, this outfit's first practice coming on the very day of daughter Annabella Rose's birth. The formative trio cut an EP for the princely sum of $400 for a local imprint. These same EP tracks would subsequently be combined with new recordings to form the 1993 album 'World Of Noise', issued through Fire Records. The following year EVERCLEAR scored a deal with major label Capitol Records. This turning point would also mark the introduction of drummer Greg Eklund, a veteran of TENSION, RED OCTOBER, THE COMMON GREENS and JOLLYMON. Eklund had also performed on the SWEATY NIPPLES album 'Bug Harvest'. The resulting EVERCLEAR album 'Sparkle and Fade' was lent valuable impetus from Alexakis' stint as an MTV reporter and radio hits 'Santa Monica' and 'Heroin Girl'.
EVERCLEAR would tour during the mid nineties with WEHRMACHT, CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER and SWEATY NIPPLES drummer Brian Lehfeldt acting as stand in. EVERCLEAR toured the UK in May of 2001 supported by VOY.
