Quite possibly Hawaii's first ever Metal band, VIXEN resulted from ex-DEUCE guitarist MARTY FRIEDMAN's decision to relocate from Baltimore, Maryland to the sunnier Pacific climate. Relocating to Hawaii in 1981, Friedman had hooked up with drummer Jeff Graves and began jamming with other local musicians, soon picking up bassist Paul Escorpeso and female vocalist Kim La Chance

VIXEN quickly began to build up a cult following on the strength of their five track demo tape. VIXEN would eventually secure a one-off deal with the Los Angeles label Azra Records. The material for the mini album was recorded in April 1982, but the record company failed to issue the the one-sided 'Made In Hawaii' until well into 1983, long after the group had split. As with many Azra releases various picture disc and coloured vinyl formats would be issued.

Still, Friedman's guitar histrionics had not gone unnoticed, Shrapnel Records' Mike Varney offering VIXEN a slot on the first 'U.S. Metal' compilation album with the new version of the DEUCE track 'Angels In The Dust'. But all was not well in paradise, as the band became progressively heavier VIXEN parted company with Kim La Chance and had replaced Escorpeso with Kimo.

The group had been offered a spot on Metal Blade's 'Metal Massacre II' album and hired Lisa Ruiz to record 'Heavy Metal Virgin' for the album under the new moniker of ALOHA. The new band was short-lived, Friedman and Graves ultimately choosing to form the even heavier HAWAII and gain a deal with Shrapnel.

Kim La Chance, on the other hand, formed MALISHA after her departure from VIXEN. The group (comprising guitarist Rrat, ex EXCALIBUR bassist Delian Shishido and drummer Joe Sylva) recorded a four track demo that was more along the lines of Y&T and SAMMY HAGAR. However, nothing appears to have been heard from Kim since.

MARTY FRIEDMAN of course carved out a worthy solo career and came to prominence in the 90's with MEGADETH.
