Biography
A quite illustrious name in American classic Rock circles, Brooklyn, New York's SIR LORD BALTIMORE included singer / drummer John Garner, often cited as the father of Stoner Rock. The group was created during 1968 by Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra (billed as Louis Caine) and bass player Gary Justin. The group scored a notable impact with 1971 album 'Kingdom Come', which generated a review, written for 'Creem's May issue by Mike Saunders, for which the first usage of the term "Heavy Metal" was applied.
Upon formation the SIR LORD BALTIMORE trio, having all known each other from high school, auditioned for talent scout Mike Appel. Undeer his guidance the band undertook a debut concert at New York's Carnegie Hall and recorded the 'Kingdom Come' album, cut at Vantone Studios in West Orange, New Jersey, with Jim Cretecos behind the desk. 'Sir Lord Baltimore' was also both co-composed and co-produced by Appel. The sessions were notably mixed at New York's Electric Lady Studios by esteemed engineer Eddie Kramer. Capitol Records issued the first offering in 1970.
As part of SIR LORD BALTOMORE's live promotion, on February 19th and 20th 1971, the band played consecutive nights at New York's Fillmore East opening a bill headed by the J.GEILS BAND and BLACK SABBATH. Further nationwide dates with BLACK SABBATH followed.
Louis Dambra's brother, Joey Dambra, enrolled as a second guitarist to record the second set 'Sir Lord Baltimore'. However, the group could not maintain momentum and duly folded. In later years band members were to attribute drugs as a primary reason for their decision to quit. The musicians did re-convene in 1975 to craft fresh material but, although recordings were conducted, no product surfaced.
The band was paid a belated, if tongue in cheek, tribute in 2002 courtesy of the 'Sucking In The 70s' album issued by Smallstone Records. SIR LORD BALTIMORE's 'Woman Tamer' was covered by a one off band comprising of FIREBALL MINISTRY's Reverend James T. Rota II, erstwhile WHITE ZOMBIE guitarist J. Yuenger and the GOATSNAKE rhythm section of bassist Guy Pinhas and drummer Greg Rogers.
During 2003 John Garner formed up part of Long Island's THE LIZARDS. Mentored by bass guitarist Randy Pratt this outfit sported an illustrious line up of Hard Rock veterans including guitarist Patrick Klein and drummer Bobby Rondinelli, the latter of RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH and BLUE OYSTER CULT repute. THE LIZARDS second album, 'Rule' issued in February of 2004, closed out with a cover of SIR LORD BALTIMORE's 'Kingdom Come'.
SIR LORD BALTIMORE released a third album, initially as a CDR, but subsequently re-pressed on John Garner's own label in 2007, entitled 'III - Raw'. These recording features original members John Garner and Louie Dambra, with bass duties handled by TONY FRANKLIN, of BLUE MURDER and THE FIRM repute, and Sam Powell.
Further interest in the band was renewed when Swedish guitarist Janne Stark, of OVERDRIVE, LOCOMOTIVE BREATH, ZELLO and RAMPAGE amongst others, demoed a cover version of 'Woman Tamer' intended for his MOUNTAIN OF POWER project. This generated a collaboration between Stark and John Garner, which generated 'Woman Tamer 2007'. This track was featured on a compilation released by Sweden Rock in June 2007 under the title JOHN GARNER'S SIR LORD BALTIMORE. Live shows and further recording and writing collaborations were planned.
