Biography
Funk Rockers 24-7 SPYZ debuted with the 'Harder Than You' album released on local New York label In Effect. With other black bands of similar ilk gaining attention, 24-7 SPYZ were snapped up by Epic Records, although did manage to force their own impression upon the scene. The group's debut 'Harder Than You' displayed their adventurous spirit to the maximum blending Hard Rock with Funk, R&B and Reggae as exemplified on the cover versions BLACK UHURU's 'Sponji Reggae' and KOOL & THE GANG's 'Jungle Boogie'.
Shortly after the second album 'Gumbo Millenium' release founder members vocalist Peter 'Fluid' Forest and drummer Anthony Johnson departing. Forest had actually announced to startled fans on 24-7 SPYZ support dates to JANE'S ADDICTION that he was quitting before he even told his fellow band members. The exiting pair would be supplanted by singer Jeff Brodinax and former ELYSIAN and GANGLAND drummer Joel Maitoza as the act switched labels to East West. The band got back in action with the stop-gap mini album 'This Is 24-7 Spyz' before 1992's Terry Date produced 'Strength In Numbers'. In the midst of recording the album 24-7 SPYZ took time out of the studio to act as special guests to PUBLIC ENEMY. 'Strength In Numbers' was generally held up to be the band's best effort by many critics to date yet was strangely overlooked. Disillusioned, JIMI HAZEL founded a fresh group entitled BLACK ANGUS. Before long though 24-7 SPYZ duly reconstructed the original line up in an attempt to re-invigorate sales but this only succeeded in delivering the 1995 album 'Temporarily Disconnected', which only saw the light of day in Europe. After a brief burst of dates on the continent this version of the band promptly folded.
During 1995 Maitoza was plugging his new band SHOCKHEAD, a union with vocalist Joseph McCraw, later of neo-Thrash act BRICK BATH, and THE NIXONS bassist Ricky Wolking. Jeff Brodinax put his efforts into the band EGYPT.
A new studio album, 'Heavy Metal Soul By The Pound', surfaced during 1996 which saw Jimi Hazel taking on the lead vocal role, a returning Joel Maitoza on drums and Doug Pinnick of KING'S X guesting on vocals. Two versions of this record emerged, 'Heavy Metal Soul By The Pound' in North America and re-billed as '6', with a slightly different track listing, for European release through the Enemy label. The album also saw the inclusion of some earlier recorded tracks featuring Carlton Smith of the ROYAL CRESCENT MOB on drums. The group issued a further release the 'If I Could' EP featuring live tracks recorded in October of 1996 in St. Louis through their fan club. They would tour Europe once more but folded sometime during 1997. Bassist Rick Skatore re-emerged in 2001 touting a new project band billed as BLOCKK 16. The debut album release, 'Too Brutal For Radio', would see SAVATAGE guitarist CHRIS CAFFREY and erstwhile SPREAD EAGLE vocalist Ray West as session guests. Other band members Ray Freeman Jr. on vocals, second guitarist Shawn Vickers of TUDE FREEKS and MARIAH repute and the GEORGE LYNCH, THIRTY STONES and BLACK SYMPHONY credited Andrew Freeman also on guitar.
Founder member JIMI HAZEL issued a 2002 solo album '21st CenturySouthBronxRockStar'. Joel Maitoza announced the formation of a fresh outfit billed as CROWN 10 in May of 2003. Hazel, Skatore and drummer Tony Lewis announced a 24-7 SPYZ reformation set for January of 2004.
