Biography

Latin-Rock fusion act founded by former DRIVER guitarist Roy Z. The debut incarnation of the band, assembled before having chosen a name, comprised Roy Z, the STEEL WOLF, SINN CITY and ANGELS credited vocalist Robbyn Garcia and bassist Kelly Pattrik. The latter had recorded with guitar virtuoso DARREN HOUSEHOLDER and would later briefly join the reformed WARRIOR along with Z. This formation recorded a 5-song demo, which landed a deal with Germany's Dream Circle label.

However, by the time of recording their Shay Baby produced inaugural album the band had been completely re-shaped, inducting lead vocalist David Young, ex-GYPSY MORENO bassist Eddie Casillas, Mario Aguilar on timbales, Doug Van Booven handling percussion and David Ingraham on the drums. Young's only prior claim to fame would be for contributing the flute intro on 'Bloodstreets' to RIOT's classic 'Thundersteel' album. This original set of recordings would not see release though, as Young's vocals were replaced by that of Dean Ortega, ex-ROZY CRUCIFIXION and NEVERLAND. Of note is that Michael Baum, responsible for keyboards on the track 'Conjuring Of The Soul' held a tradition in the cult underground as a formative, fourteen year old bassist for Switzerland's notorious HELLHAMMER. He had then journeyed on to Los Angeles to found AOR act SIERRA before enrolling into TRIBE OF GYPSIES.

During 1994 IRON MAIDEN vocalist BRUCE DICKINSON recruited the TRIBE OF GYPSIES members to record his 'Balls To Picasso' album. TRIBE OF GYPSIES supported BRUCE DICKINSON in Japan to promote the first album. These dates marked the introduction of two new band members, percussionist Elvis Balladares and keyboard player Ray Rodriguez, the latter having connections to BERLIN and Greg Leon's WISHING WELL.

The six track mini-album of 1997 sees cover versions of STEVE WINWOOD's 'I'm A Man' and FLEETWOOD MAC's 'Oh Well'. The latter track had been previously recorded in a very different version by Roy Z and Doug Van Booven together with the esteemed cast of BILLY SHEEHAN on lead vocals and bass, keyboard player Tommy Mandel and drummer Gregg Bissonette for the 1995 'Rattlesnake Guitar - The Music of Peter Green' tribute album on Viceroy Records.

Roy Z co-wrote and guested on Los Angeles Metal band WARRIOR's comeback album 'Ancient Future' in 1998. The band also put in an extended tour once more as part of BRUCE DICKINSON's band in support of his 'Chemical Wedding' album. The same year saw TRIBE OF GYPSIES, working with WARRIOR guitarist Joe Floyd as co-producer, back in the Silver Cloud studios in Burbank for their 'Revolution 13' album, the band now being fronted by ex-SEVENTH SIGN and 9.0 singer Gregg Analla.

Roy Z had a very fruitful end to the century producing the debut album by ex-JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Rob Halford's HALFORD combo and reforging his production links with WARRIOR. 2000 also saw the release of the third TRIBE OF GYPSIES album, the group now including bass prodigy Juan Perez. This latest candidate's musical lineage included L.A. avantgarde Thrashers CIVIL DEFIANCE, appearing on their 1997 Europeon tour with PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, the off-shoot KKLEQ MUZZIL one album on Criterion Records and PHILM, an alliance with Gerry Nestler of CIVIL DEFIANCE and SLAYER / GRIP INC. drum maestro DAVE LOMBARDO.

This third band outing saw Japanese editions on the JVC Victor label released under the title 'Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants', but was renamed to simply 'Tribe Of Gypsies III' in Europe. Japanese versions of the record bravely closed out with a cover version of GARY MOORE's 'Parisienne Walkways'. The record closes out, after a ten minute silence, with a hidden track 'Over All'. In the Autumn of 2000 TRIBE OF GYPSIES opened for SANTANA on part of his 'Supernatural' US tour. Filling in on drums for David Ingraham, having jumped ship to THE YOUNG DUBLINERS, would be Danilo Torres of QUEZAL.

Roy Z would enroll as touring guitarist for DOWNSET in late 2002 and subsequently the HALFORD band during 2003. He would continue this association by gaining the job of producer for the 2004 comeback JUDAS PRIEST album 'Angel Of Retribution'. Z also gained a co-write credit on the track 'Deal With The Devil'.

It was revealed in April 2005 that Greg Analla was sessioning with MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP guitarist/keyboard player Wayne Findlay and the WARLORD and FATES WARNING credited drummer Mark Zonder in a new project billed TEMPLEWITHIN. This combo signed to Greek label Black Lotus Records for a 2006 album 'Slaviour'.
