Biography

An all girl Pop Rock band verging slightly on New Wave, THE ORCHIDS were managed by KIM FOWLEY and featured bassist Laurie McAllister who had replaced Vicki Blue in THE RUNAWAYS for a short period before they fragmented.

ORCHIDS were formed rather ironically from two projects Kim was producing at the same time. Blonde bombshell drummer Laurie Bell had recorded for the Bomp compilation album 'Vampires From Outer Space' (masterminded by Fowley) with the track 'If You're Gonna Change Your Heart'. The album also featured Laurie McAlister playing bass in the group BABY ROULETTE AND THE RAVE ONS on, ironically, 'Black Ortchids'.

Bell had actually worked with Fowley back in 1978 in a short-lived, unidentified 'supergroup' that also featured other Fowley associates Tommy Rock, 14 year old guitarist Dyan Diamond and Steven T. The latter individual had, of course, penned songs (and reportedly played on the first two albums) for THE RUNAWAYS. He also co-wrote much of CHERIE CURRIE's first solo album.

Joining forces Bell and McAllister teamed up with vocalist / guitarist Jan King and guitarists Subie Sunn and Che Zuro and THE ORCHIDS, as they became known, signed to MCA Records for a single, self-titled album in 1980.

Interestingly, in 1987 Jan King and Che Zuro were back in the limelight, the pair teaming up in the provocatively named Los Angeles club band PUSS N' BOOTS. with erstwhile ORCHIDS drummer Laurie Bell. Bassist Tami East rounded out the group.

In the interim period the quartet had played in a number of other Los Angeles bands, including VALENTINE, TANTRUM, SPITFIRE, RUBY TUESDAY and BACKSTAGE PASS. By the time the girls had formed PUSSN' BOOTS the sound had moved away from the Punkish nature of THE ORCHIDS to a embrace much more of a Metal direction.

Despite not gaining a deal, PUSS N' BOOTS nevertheless concocted a couple of critically raved over demo tapes.

In 1988 a second ORCHIDS album was reported to have been recorded and set for release through Neon Angel Records. Entitled 'Jukebox Rebel' and produced by Kim Fowley, the album contained eleven tracks and was recorded with a line-up of Laurie Bell , Jan King, Che Zuro, Laurie McAllister and keyboardist Sindy Sinn. However, it is open to speculation as to whether this record was actually released.
