Biography

The son of the late FRANK ZAPPA, Dweezil recorded his first single at the age of 12. 'My Mother Was A Space Cadet' ('Crunchy Water' was the flip) was released on his dad's Barking Pumpkin Records. The song was written by Dweezil, sister Moon Unit and Frank's guitar player Steve Vai. Production duties were handled by VAN HALEN engineer Don Landee and Eddie Van Halen himself!

obviously inspired by his father than he was by Eddie Van Halen and RATT's WARREN DE MARTINI the young Zappa featured on his father's 1984 'Them And Us' album.

Pursuing acting roles and, at one time, employed as a VJ on MTV, Dweezil was romantically linked by the tabloids to CHER (which Zappa denied) but was dating actress Molly Ringwald ('Pretty In Pink', 'The Breakfast Club') at one time. He was reportedly so in awe of MADONNA he had a guitar specially painted with the artwork from her 'True Blue' album cover which he managed to arrange to be personally signed by the star after blagging his way into one of her video shoots in Los Angeles.

Zappa released his first solo album, 'Having A Bad Day', through Rykodisc in 1987 before signing to Chrysalis for the sophomore 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama'.

Dweezil's second album was produced by Beau Hill. The title track was originally written and recorded by Frank Zappa.

'My Guitar..' was recorded with a host of celebrities. Ex FRANK ZAPPA and MISSING PERSONS drummer Terry Bozzio (who had previously jammed with Dweezil on a cover of HERBIE HANCOCK's 'Wipe Out' on the 'Back To The Beach' soundtrack), longtime FRANK ZAPPA bassist Scott Thunes, Steve Smith of JOURNEY, FIONA and RATT's Bobby Blotzer made appearances. Dweezil's younger brother Ahmet sang lead on 'The Coolest Guy In The World' and the 'Bon Jovi All Girl Choir' supplying backing vocals included WINGER mainman Kip Winger's brothers Nate and Paul plus Beau Hill for good measure.

However having left Chrysalis after 'My Guitar...' had outlived its welcome, disgusted with the nature in which the company operated Dweezil (in true Zappa fashion) would be quick to berate the label at every opportunity after signing to Music For Nations' Food For Thought imprint.

link up with the British independent came through his father's connections with the company, the label having gained the rights to re-issue Frank's back catalogue some time previously. Dweezil would enjoy working with the company and would enjoy a relationship with Music For Nations that saw his Z project (a band put together with Ahmet) come to fruition.

1991's 'Confessions' included an outrageous cover of the BEE GEE's 'Stayin' Alive' recorded with help from OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist ZAKK WYLDE, TOTO's STEVE LUKATHER, RATT / WHITESNAKE man WARREN DE MARTINI, EXTREME's NUNO BETTENCOURT and session veteran Tim Pierce on guitars and DONNY OSMOND on vocals!

sister Moon Unit sings lead on 'Vanity'.
