Biography
Assembling his band in 1979 whilst simultaneously recording the AEROSMITH album 'Night In The Ruts' Perry recruited former BUX vocalist Ralph Morman and a rhythm section of ex-DIRTY ANGEL and TED NUGENT bassist David Hull and drummer Ronnie Stewart. However, Morman was ousted, later resurfacing in Malibu club band CHAMELEON, in favour of former REVOLVER front man Joey Mala who lasted a mere three gigs. The second album, 1981's 'I've Got The Rock n' Rolls Again' produced by Bruce Botnick, featured the third in the line of singers ex-BALLOON man Charlie Farren. The band toured the album opening for HEART and ZZ TOP.
Perry opted for a totally new look in 1982 pulling in his former AEROSMITH sidekick guitarist Brad Whitford (who had just folded his WHITFORD/ST. HOLMES project) together with erstwhile THUNDERTRAIN vocalist Mark 'Mach Bell', bassist Danny Hargrove and drummer Joe Pet. This unit gigged solidly for two years until Perry received the call to return to AEROSMITH.
Farren and Hull stuck together and eventually returned with FARRENHEIT (David Hull adopting the surname of Heit for the occasion) and a Keith Olsen produced eponymous debut on Warner Brothers in 1987.
Post JOE PERRY PROJECT Bell created THE WILD BUNCH. Bowing out of the music scene Bell indulged himself in motorbike racing before finding a new career as a chef in Beverley Hills. Bell resurfaced in 1996 working with guitarist Dave Zolla, bassist Aart Knyff and drummer Jon Gutlan in the band LAST MAN STANDING for an eponymous album release. Bell's THUNDERTRAIN made a return to live action in 2003, this event being marked by the re-issue of the 'Suicide Train' album through Gulcher Records.
Whitford had departed before recording of the third album for MCA Records. Perry rejoined AEROSMITH in April 1984, resurrecting the track 'Let The Music Do The Talking', at the request of Steven Tyler, for the 'Done With Mirrors' reunion album. The guitarist enjoyed a renaissance period with AEROSMITH throughout the late 80s and post millenium. In 2005 the guitarist launched a solo effort simply billed 'Joe Perry'.
