Biography
Former TARGET, COBRA and SURVIVOR front man Jim Jamison went solo in 1991 with his 'When Love Comes Down' album. This followed rumours that he had been tapped for the vacant vocalist's position in DEEP PURPLE the year previously but declined the offer after his manager persuaded him that a solo career was far more important. Jamison's profile was high, having been largely responsible for spearheading SURVIVOR's most commercially successful albums. With SURVIVOR, Jamison notched up no less than five top ten singles, four gold, platinum and double-platinum albums. More dubiously perhaps, his song 'I'm Always Here' came to international prominence as the theme tune for 'Baywatch'.
The material on Jim's album contained collaborations with ex-CONEY HATCH man CARL DIXON and SAMMY HAGAR associate Jesse Harms. Amongst those musicians contributing to the record were erstwhile CHOPPER keyboardist Kim Bullard, the aforementioned Carl Dixon on guitar, Jimmy Davis (from JIMMY DAVIS & THE JUNCTION), ALICE COOPER drummer Craig Kampf and cult AOR hero Brett Walker on backing vocals.
Interestingly, Jamison had actually made his solo debut on the soundtrack album to the Sylvestor Stallone movie 'Lock Up' with a cover of SURVIVOR's 'Ever Since The World Began'. The original version had been sung by Jamison's predecessor Dave Bickler on the 'Eye Of The Tiger' album a few years before Jim had replaced him in the Chicago band's ranks. The track was recorded as a Jamison solo piece as SURVIVOR had already broken up by the time Stallone called and personally requested the song be re-recorded.
Jamison assembled a group of guitarists John Roth, later to join WINGER, and Hal McCormack, keyboard player Tony Thomas, bassist David Cochran and drummer Greg Moore. Only the two guitarists and the bassist played on the 'When Love Comes Down' album. 1996 found Jamison guesting on former MOLLY HATCHET and FOGHAT bassist RIFF WEST's animal welfare charity album 'Animal Magnetism'.
1999 had Jamison back in command releasing 'Empires' credited to JIMI JAMISON'S SURVIVOR. This record, featuring CREED's Hal Butler and originally released by USG Records, was re-issued on the Italian Frontiers labels in 2003 with two extra tracks.
The singer's 2008 album, 'Crossroads Moment' recorded for the Italian label Frontiers Records, featured the track 'When Rock Was King. It name checks some of rock's biggest influences and features Jimi along with Don Barnes of 38 SPECIAL, Joe Lynn Turner of RAINBOW, Toby Hitchcock of PRIDE OF LIONS, Lisa McClowry, Jim Peterik plus another other ex-SURVIVOR vocalist Dave Bickler. His core sudio band for this album comprised guitarists Mike Aquino, Joel Hoktra and Jim Peterik, bass playerKlem Hayes, keyboard players Christian Cullen and Jeff Lanz with Ed Breckenfeld on the drums.
