JASON BECKER
Biography
The 19 year old Becker was guitarist with CACOPHONY alongside MARTY FRIEDMAN when he recorded the 'Perpetual Burn' solo album. Becker contributed guitar parts to DAVID LEE ROTH's 'A Little Ain't Enough' album. Dealt a cruel blow of bad luck, just as Becker seemed on the edge of the stardom he deserved touring with DAVID LEE ROTH, the young guitarist was diagnosed as suffering with the crippling Lou Gehrig's disease commonly known as ALS. Tragically, the disease left the guitarist completely without the use of his body.
In 1996 he was signed for a one-album deal with music giant Warner Brothers and resulting product was the 'Perspectives' solo effort. It was to be one of his last significant recording efforts before the disease hampered his ability to play. In 1999 he released an album of rare and unreleased material, bits and piece of songs called 'The Raspberry Jams' on the Shrapnel label. When the true extent of his predicament was learned his fellow musicians rallied around in a show of camradarie resulting fresh recording interpretations of Becker's music to remind the world of his talent.
Becker still composed music albeit with great difficulty using a computer scanner to read and his eyes to communicate to others. When the true extent of his predicament was learned his fellow musicians rallied around in a show of camradarie resulting fresh recording interpretations of Becker's music to remind the world of his talent.
The tribute album, entitled 'Warmth In The Wilderness' and released by Lion Music on July 22nd 2001 (Becker's birthday), boasted a quite staggering array of guest contributors. Included were fellow guitarists MARTY FRIEDMAN, VINNIE MOORE, PAUL GILBERT, PATRICK RONDAT, NIGHTRANGER and MOTHERS ARMY man Jeff Watson, DEEP PURPLE's Steve Morse, LIEGE LORD's Paul Nelson, ALEX MASI, MOGG/WAY's Jeff Kollman, LARS ERIC MATTSSON and former MEGADETH member CHRIS POLAND. Also involved were DOKKEN's bassist Jeff Pilson. Erstwhile DANGER DANGER mentor Ted Poley, ROBIN McAULEY, MARK BOALS, Mark Mangold, Jeff Scheetz, Stuart Smith, EMPIRE's Rolf Munkes and Kenny Aaronson.
The 31 track, double disc set included bands cover material from across Becker's entire career as well as original compostions by Matthias Eklund of FREAKHOUSE and Rob Johnstone each dedicated to Becker. In 2002 Becker and Shrapnel collaborated again for another collection of bits and pieces of demos and song ideas from Jason's career circa 1987-1988. This was called 'The Blackberry Jams'. The 31 track, 73 minute monstrosity was at times no more than a riff or musical fragment from the vaults but many of them included demo form work with MARTY FRIEDMAN from the early CACOPHONY era.
December 2002 saw Lion Music release another another all-star Tribute to Becker, namely 'Warmth In The Wilderness Vol. II. Following a similar format as Vol. I, the 27 track double-disc set was loaded with countless guest musicians. This time most of the tracks were not covers of Jason's own material but original compositions written about and for Becker. There were new songs from such heavy hitters as LARS ERIC MATTSSON, RANDY COVEN and STEVE VAI.
Becker is currently resting comfortably at home with friends and family where he continues to compose music.
