A new band unit billed as ONE would be announced in February 2006, created by musicians freed up by the classic ASIA reformation of JOHN WETTON, STEVE HOWE, GEOFF DOWNES and Carl Palmer. Singer John Payne, formatively of BITE THE BULLET and RAIN, had been fronting ASIA up to that point, last featuring on 2004's 'Silent Nation', whilst guitarist Guthrie Govan and drummer Jay Schellen had been recent recruits. The latter's history tracked back through acts such as BADFINGER, SIRCLE OF SILENCE, UNRULY CHILD and HURRICANE.

In the wake of Downes opting out to participate in the reunion, John Payne, Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen, working with Ryo Okumoto from SPOCK'S BEARD, formed a new outfit billed ONE, signing to Inside Out Music for a debut record. In June 2006 the group, being made aware that there was more than one ONE, switched title to GPS. The band set up tour dates in Europe backing Y&T in September.
