Biography
FREAK OF NATURE vocalist MIKE TRAMP made his name with WHITE LION and was also previously frontman for Danish Pop sensations MABEL in the late 70s. Fronting the Spanish based STUDS Tramp fronted up a self-titled 1982 album prior to his relocation the USA and eventual platinum success courtesy of WHITE LION. The band would prove to be a radical departure from the image centred WHITE LION, Tramp adopting a 'modern' image, dispensing with his trademark locks and fronting up a band which at first displayed an undeniable Grunge stereotype. Although the debut, self-titled record, released in 1993 through Music For Nations, did not shift in large quantities FREAK OF NATURE's relentless work ethic brought in many admirers. Based in Los Angeles, the original line-up featured Tramp's fellow Dane Oliver Steffanson on guitar but he was quickly replaced for the recording of the band's debut album by ex-V.V.S.I. and HOUSE OF LORDS member Dennis Chick. Steffenson returned home to Denmark and formed Y with former members of GEISHA and MERCYFUL FATE. Bassist Jerry Best had previously been with LION.
Concentrating on exhaustive touring, FREAK OF NATURE toured non-stop throughout 1993 and 1994 playing a mixture of headlining shows, mainly in Britain, and support slots in Europe with HELLOWEEN and DIO.
During the recording of the second album, 'Gathering Of Freaks', Kenny Korade quit the group and was eventually replaced in time for more European touring commitments in December 1994 by a former session player, English born Marcus Nand who would later recieve a playing credit on the FREDERIKSON / PHILLIPS album.
Frustrated at not being able to step up otside of the club circuit in Britain and with increasing friction between certain members of the band starting to take its toll. The band abandoned plans for a new round of British dates in early 1995 and returned home under the smokescreen that the record company were not fully behind the group by not releasing a new single to coincide with the tour. Needless to say, Tramp split the group upon reaching America, Jerry Best immediately getting an offer to join DIO.
Mike Tramp set to work on a solo project following the band's split and signed a deal for Europe with the French based CNR label for the release of his first album, 'Capricorn' in September 1997. Former FREAK OF NATURE colleagues Kenny Korade and Jerry Best helped in the recording process contributing guitar and bass respectively, whilst keyboards were handled by ex-CHOPPER and Y KANT TORI READ member Kim Bullard. Tramp's erstwhile WHITE LION colleague James LoMenzo offered backing vocals on a couple of songs.
1998 saw the release of the original FREAK OF NATURE tapes with Steffenson on guitar titled 'Outcasts'. Late 2003 found former bass man Jerry Best recording and contributing his songwriting skills to COURTNEY LOVE's ' 'America's Sweetheart' album. With attempts at a WHITE LION reformation faltering in 2004, MIKE TRAMP took out his new band, billed TRAMP'S WHITE LION, on tour North America commencing in February of 2005.
