Biography

Fronted by ex-DÉTENTE members vocalist Dawn Crosby, guitarist Michael Carlino and bassist Blair Derby, FEAR OF GOD was an act of huge potential, but blighted by an ever shifting line-up. The band was actually signed to major label Warner Brothers by Roberta Peterson whilst still named DÉTENTE. As DETENTE they tested the market with a three track 1989 Alex Perialis produced demo tape comprising of 'All That Remains', 'Deceased' and 'Waysted Time'. A further effort led by the track 'Love's Death' ensued the same year.

The band's roster at the time included Rob 'Wacko' Hunter, drummer of NWoBHM stalwarts RAVEN. As negotiations with the label drew on Hunter bowed out and New Jersey's Eric Alpert was drafted. His tenure would be brief though and the band finally settled on Steve Cordova to occupy the drum stool.

It was discovered that the band name DÉTENTE had already been registered so initial recordings were convened under the band name SEDITION. The album tapes for 'Within The Veil' would be re-mixed for release by Andy Wallace and with due process of time the group evolved into FEAR OF GOD.

A month long trek across North America to promote the album caused internal frictions that would cause Cordova to leave as soon as dates were fulfilled. Drummer Brendan Etter of Industrial act NATURE would figure in the group's 1991 line-up for a showcase gig at the 'Foundations Forum' but would leave the following year. Crosby would also replace bassist Blair Darby having met his replacement, a rastafarian named Jason Levin, by way of a chance meeting on a train.

The band travelled to London's Battery studios in early 1992 to work with esteemed producer Chris Tsangarides FEAR OF GOD would practically split up in the midst of recording a projected second album for Warner Brothers just upfront of a booked series of European shows.

The FEAR OF GOD that European audiences actually saw on stage would in fact only involve Crosby from the previous line-up. Assisting for these shows, which included a prestigious appearance at the Dutch 'Aardschok' festival, was WRATHCHILD AMERICA members guitarists Jay Abbene and Terry Carter along with drummer Shannon Larkin and HAVE MERCY and JAKKPOT man Rob Michael on bass.

Whilst Larkin depped for the band a more permanent member Douglas Sylvia, previously with GENETICIDE and SKELETAL EARTH, was brought into the fold. FEAR OF GOD, retaining Michael and Sylvia but with new guitarists Brandon Hefner and Randy Bobzien, cut fresh demos for Warner Bros. In a much more aggressive style. These tapes would be re-recorded with new drummer John Grden of HAVE MERCY. Warner Bros. dropped the act still believing they were heading into Death Metal territory and in September of 1993 Hefner quit the ranks.

The band's second album 'Toxic Voodoo', issued on the Pavement label in 1994, sported another all new look to the band structure. Guitars came courtesy of Chris Kalandras and Randy Bobzien with a rhythm section culled from HAVE MERCY being bassist Robert Ian Michael (also a member of JAKKPOT) and drummer John Grden. However, Crosby's reliance on drugs and alcohol had severely affected the recording process putting yet further strains on the band.

Michael, Kalandras and Bobzien left the band en masse mere weeks prior to the 'Toxic Voodoo' tour. Replacements were hastily drafted in the form of guitarists Sparky Voyles and Bill Hayden together with former DESECRATION, SPINE and VOX HUMANA bassist Bruce Greig. This revised unit would set to work on a scheduled third album but Voyles would relinquish his position to Frank DiMauro.

The resulting album demo did not favour with Pavement and yet more fractures occurred within the ranks with DiMauro being usurped by Tony Mallory of CHAPEL BLACQUE, who also took on keyboard duties. Grieg too would leave for NEXT STEP UP being replaced by Mike Schafer.

FEAR OF GOD's last outing was the cassette album 'Killing The Pain' in 1997.

Sadly Dawn Crosby was to die tragically young on December 15th 1996, of acute liver failure due to years of excessive alcohol abuse. The remaining members, including Mallory, Haydon and Grden, persevered billed simply as FOG.

John Grden would later show up in BLACK MASS and- along with Haydon- PESSIMIST. By early 2004 Grden was operational with FIRES OF GOMORRAH in league with ex-BLACK MASS guitarist The Blasphemous One (a.k.a. Russ Strahan). Sparky Voyles journeyed through SADISTIC TORMENT. M.O.D., DYING FETUS and by September 2001 was ensconced as a member of MISERY INDEX.
