Biography
Instrumental act led by MOGG/WAY guitarist Jeff Kollman. Joining in the proceedings were the ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN rhythm section of bassist BARRY SPARKS and drummer Shane Gaalaas. All three musicians assisted UFO vocalist Phil Mogg on his solo venture STONETOWNE. Sparks and Gaalaas also make their presence felt on ULI JON ROTH's 2000 album 'Transcendental Sky Guitar'. The band would also donate their version of 'Murders in Rue Morgue' to a 2000 IRON MAIDEN tribute album 'Slaves To The Power'. For COSMOSQUAD live work in 2000 Chris Maloney temporarily took the place of Sparks.
Sparks returned to the fold as COSMOSQUAD put in a live 2001 Halloween showing at the Baked Potato venue in North Hollywood, California. Sparks was also announced as having landed the position of new bassist for DOKKEN replacing JEFF PILSON. Gaalaas meantime maintained his workload working on an instrumental album in alliance with ex-MEGADETH guitarist MARTY FRIEDMAN and esteemed UFO veteran Michael Schenker. The drummer would also join the GLENN HUGHES band for shows in Russia during November.
COSMOSQUAD issued the studio 'Squadrophenia' album and live opus 'Live At The Baked Potato' in March of 2002 through the Dutch Mascot label in Europe and through Kollman's own Marmalade imprint in America. 'Squadrophenia' would feature a guest session from erstwhile MEGADETH guitarist CHRIS POLAND. Gaalas would be announced as touring drummer for Japanese megastar band B'Z, also featuring ex-MR. BIG / TALAS bassist BILLY SHEEHAN, for a summer run of dates in Japan. Kollman also partook of side endeavours forming part of THE MONROE BAND for the 'Control' album. Acting as both guitarist and producer Kollman formed part of a band unit alongside vocalist Rick Monroe, bass player Chris Maloney and SPEAK NO EVIL drummer Charlie Waymire. With Barry Sparks committed to European dates with DOKKEN Christopher Maloney of HARDLINE, Z, $IGN OF 4 and THE MONROE BAND would be drafted as temporary replacement for COSMOSQUAD gigs in May.
In November Barry Sparks formed part of the UK 'Legends Of Rock' classic rock extravaganza starring German guitar gurus ULI JON ROTH and UFO's Michael Schenker, GLENN HUGHES, JACK BRUCE and FRANK MARINO. Sparks would be in high international demand as subsequent to 2003 tour work with DOKKEN the bassist then formed up part of TED NUGENT's band before joining veteran German Rockers the SCORPIONS in the studio. He would close the year by gigging in Japan with the B'Z.
The band's original line up - guitarist Jeff Kollman, bassist Barry Sparks and drummer Shane Gaalaas reunited for a one off 1st April 2004 performance at their familiar haunt of the Hollywood Baked Potato. BARRY SPARKS issued his solo 'Can't Look Back' album in 2004. Notable guest contributions came from Billy Gibbons of ZZ TOP and TED NUGENT.
That July Kollman and Gaalas debuted an all new venture dubbed THE CRUMB BROS., a quintet in union with lead vocalist Mark Renk, ARTENSION and EDWIN DARE bassist Kevin Chown and keyboard player Stephen Anderson. Cutting an album entitled 'Recycled Influence' this unit debuted on the live front on 13th July at Club Lingerie in Hollywood.
With regular UFO bassist PETE WAY experiencing visa difficulties, Jeff Kollman took over bass duties for UFO's July 2005 US tour dates.
COSMOSQUAD returned in 2007, cutting the album 'Acid Test' at Crumb West Studios in Simi Valley, California between February and April. The record saw release on Marmaduke in North America and Mascot in Europe. Minus longstanding bassist Barry Sparks, 'Acid Test' witnessed bass duties shared between Jeff Kollman's EDWIN DARE bandmate Kevin Chown, also of ARTENSION, TONY MACALPINE and UNCLE CRACKER, Christopher Maloney, Paul Shinadeh and Albert Zilboon. Keyboards were supplied by Ed Roth, of IMPELLITTERI, GLENN HUGHES and FATES WARNING. Christopher Maloney joined Kollman and Gaalaas for live work.
The group played half a dozen shows in Tokyo and Osaka in March 2008. COSMOSQUAD released its first-ever live DVD, entitled 'Lights... Camera... Squad!', on 12th July in Japan as a joint venture between Marmaduke Records and Sunset Records. The set was recorded during the band's 18th October 2007 performance at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. In September COSMOSQUADonce more returned to Japan for live dates.
