Biography

The son of Selar Sabu, the legendary child star of 'The Elephant Boy' films, PAUL SABU has made his name as a singer, songwriter and producer. The debut album, which featured former MARCUS drummer Dan Holmes, garnered ecstatic reviews and Sabu found himself praised as a major songwriter. Impact was lost though in the confusion of another eponymous SABU release, a disco album recorded by the same line-up in 1979 and released by Ocean Records.

At the turn of the decade Sabu claims that the English producer John Eden contacted him with regards to a possible link up with WHITESNAKE, but nothing came of it. Indeed, Sabu was not heard of again until he gained a deal for his new outfit KIDD GLOVE from the Motown owned Morocco label in 1984. Sabu re-formed SABU in 1987 after KIDD GLOVE fell apart. Sabu had spent time in production previously including E. WADE's 1986 album 'Foreign Shores. The band released the 'Heartbreak' album through the Wolverhampton based Heavy Metal America label in 1988, basically a collection of old demos left over from the KIDD GLOVE project. Musicians utilised were bassist Rick Bozzo, keyboard player Dan Ellis and drummer Charles Esposito.

SABU was to be seriously affected by the label going into liquidation, leaving Paul to rethink his strategy, with the result that he promptly put a new band together, ONLY CHILD. Sabu got back into production handling songwriting & production duties for an album that was shelved at the time by singer Eilleen Edwards. These sessions would reappear in 1999 as 'Wild & Wicked' after Edwards had made her mark globally rechristened SHANIA TWAIN.

Rick Bozzo created RENEGADE in 1989 with ex-BLUE CHEER guitarist Rueben De Fuentes, vocalist SUSANLYNCH and erstwhile SURVIVOR drummer Marc Droubay. As a solo artist PAUL SABU released a 1995 album.

Paul Sabu would later hook up with ex-BONFIRE members Joerg Deisinger and Angel Schlieffer to form a proposed new version of ONLY CHILD. However, as it transpired the new group took on the SABU title. This union came about as the German duo had lost a litigation brought by core BONFIRE personnel Claus Lessmann and Hans Ziller to the rights to the band title.

The resulting product, seeing Derek Smith on drums, was considerably heavier than past SABU material, taking on a harder sound and with Paul Sabu's voice remarkably rougher in approach. This band also cut the 1998 'Between The Light' album, this effort, including a cover version of STEVIE WONDER's 'I Was Made To Love Her', having both Smith and Tony Montana sessioning on drums. Ultimately the US / German axis divided, Schlieffer issuing the CHARADE album in Japan whilst Deisinger founded SOUL DOCTOR before reforging DEMON DRIVE. As part of his long running career as a producer Sabu gained credits on the 2002 'The Hand That Rocks' album from SILENT RAGE vocalist JESSE DAMON, also contributing guitar parts.

An unexpected twist in the story occurred in 2003. SOUL DOCTOR, whilst on the road in February, suddenly lost the services of Deisinger. He re-appeared in alliance with Sabu and Schliefer in March of 2003 re-billed as SABU. The album 'Unsurfaced' was promptly issued, in actuality a reissue of their two previous albums in one package. The new look SABU would be completed with the addition of early BONFIRE drummer Dominic Huelshorst.
