Biography
LUNACHICKS broke the mould for female acts, eschewing the Riot Grrrl stereotypes by mixing up Punk, Glam and performance art that was never less than blatantly in your face. The band's music betrayed 70's Sleaze persuasions but visually LUNACHICKS non conformist and unashamed humourous arsenal of silver spandex, platform boots, tattoos and skyscraper wigs put them on an altogether unique pedestal.
LUNACHICKS started making a noise for themselves in 1987 when Lower East Side club goers would be transfixed by such stage antics as singer Theo Kogan, attended by Siamese twins, 'gave birth' to a giant fly. SONIC YOUTH's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, early champions of the band, produced an initial set of demos. Don Fury lent his production skills to the 1989 eponymous gatefold EP. The band's album debut, the self produced 'Babysitters On Acid' released by the British Blast First label, was initially available only in Europe. The same label released the track 'Jan Brady' as a split 7" single shared with the BUTTHOLE SURFERS. Live tracks culled from a CBGB's 'Scumfest' club gig 'Makin It (With Other Species)' and 'P.S. Hell' also surfaced on a ROIR compilation cassette.
LUNACHICKS also donated their rendition of SHONEN KNIFE's 'Antonia Baka Boy' to a 1990 tribute album collection. Another cover track, 'Noise Annoys - Promises', emerged on the BUZZCOCKS tribute 'Something's Gone Wrong Again' put out by the CZ label. Following 1992's 'Bing And Purge' offering, the back cover photo for which showed the band caked in vomit (!), the group released the Japanese only 'Sushi Ala Mode' EP before signing to the Go Kart label for a long term deal commencing with 1995's 'Jerk Of All Trades' album.
The band paid homage to IGGY POP in 1997 by covering 'Passenger' for inclusion on a tribute album 'We Will Fall'. LUNACHICKS, now down to a quartet as rhythm guitarist Sindi had defected, recorded a show at Coney Island High in February of 1998 for the live album 'Drop Dead Live'. 1999 proved a good year for celluloid performances from the LUNACHICKS. Not only did the band issue the viseo 'XXX Naked' but Squid appeared in the movie 'Open Return' whilst Kogan played the part of a whore in the Martin Scorsese film 'Bringing Out The Dead'. In October drummer Chip exited, the band soon drafting another Brooklyn native, the 19 year old Helen Destroy, as substitute.
2000 kicked off with European headline dates in January through until March before the USA beckoned with a showing on the summer 'Warped' festival' tour. The group opted to enter into hiatus in early 2001.
Post LUNACHICKS, Theo struck out solo, Gina Volpe fronted up a New York based trio entitled BANTAM whilst Squid, taking to vocals and guitar with Tracy Almazon of NASHVILLE PUSSY on the drums, founded TEAM SQUID. Chip joined up with SUICIDE KING. Becky Wreck could be found on the road with Punks CANDY ASS. CBGB's hosted a welcome 'Lunachick Fringe' concert in early April of 2002, the night playing host to THE DOXIES and all four LUNACHICKS side projects before the band reunited to top off the event.
