Biography
BERLIN is an AOR / Pop Rock act that impressed themselves upon the world with their huge global hit 'Take My Breath Away' from the 'Top Gun' movie soundtrack. The BERLIN that the general public first became aware of comprised guitarist / keyboard player David Diamond, bassist John Crawford and the strikin Terri Nunn on lead vocals. However, this line-up that was included on the sleeve artwork for their gold mini album 'Pleasure Victims' had already been made redundant before the record hit the shops.
The band started life named THE TOYS. A name switch to BERLIN found Ty Cobb as lead vocalist. He was replaced by Virginia then Toni Childs. The 19 year old Nunn replied to an advert placed by Crawford after Childs announced her intention of going solo. Previously, Nunn had come close to stardom early on in her career as a budding actress, nearly usurping Carrie Fisher for the role of Princess Leia in 'Star Wars'. When the band scored a deal Diamond departed and BERLIN was brought up to strength with guitarist Ric Olsen, keyboard player Matt Reid and drummer Rod Leaned.
BERLIN's 7 track mini album of 1982 'Pleasure Victims', which included the MTV hit 'Sex (I'm A ...)', proved an instant success and the band were on their way. On the eve of a European tour Learned departed and in came Rob Brill.
With the Bob Ezrin produced 'Count Three & Pray' album BERLIN scored a number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic with the Giorgio Moroder ballad 'Take My Breath Away'. In fact none of the BERLIN band members appeared on this track besides Nunn and the record company had to persuade Moroder to include the track on the album. Such was the impact of this song that it was to re-chart in Britain going back up to number 3 four years after release. The album includes guitars from THE CARS Elliot Easton, TED NUGENT, Gene Black, Steve Dougherty (later of EYES), PINK FLOYD's DAVE GILMOUR, Alan Murphy, Gregg Wright and ALICE COOPER's KANE ROBERTS. For touring to promote the album throughout 1986 and 1987 BERLIN assembled a live band which included ex-PABLO CRUISE guitarist STEF BURNS, later of Y&T and ALICE COOPER.
However, BERLIN would break up with Crawford and Brill forming THE BIG F. TERRI NUNN later went solo issuing 1992's 'Moment Of Truth' and turned up on a duet with Goth gods SISTERS OF MERCY. After forging SIN CITY Nunn was granted the rights to use the BERLIN name with a new act based around guitarist Dallan Baumgarten, bassist Lance Morrison, WARRANT and DIO keyboard player Scott Warren and drummer Roger Carter.
A live album was issued in 2000. In favour Nu-Metal band SYSTEM OF A DOWN covered 'The Metro' for the 'Dracula 2000' movie soundtrack. The band would announce a comeback 2002 studio album entitled 'Voyeurs', contributors included erstwhile SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman Billy Corgan co-writing a track'Sacred And Profane'.
