Biography

Ann Arbor Glam Rock band BROWNSVILLE STATION, founded during 1969, was big on all the traditional acrutrements of the genre, silver spandex, flares and stackheels, plus frontman Cub Koda's enormous owl like spectacles. They would even cover GARY GLITTER's 'I'm The Leader Of The Gang' and lend support to SLADE's 1973 US tour. BROWNSVILLE STATION started life as a quartet of Koda, a veteran Rockabilly act the DEL-TINOS, guitarist Michael Lutz, bassist Tony Driggins and drummer T.J. Cronley but would trim down to a trio, pulling in Henry Weck on drums.

The band's first commercial release would be a 1969 7" single 'Rock n' Roll Holiday', backed by a rendition of ELVIS PRESLEY's 'Jailhouse Rock', on the minor Hideout label. Major label Polydor then picked the band up, promptly re-issuing the single that same year. Switching to the Palladium label the 'No B.S.' album and follow up single 'Be-Bop Confidential' arrived in 1970. Once again a major label picked the group up as Warner Bros. then re-issued both the album single, also releasing 'Do The Bosco' and 'That's Fine' in 1971.

The group switch labels once more to Big Tree for the 1972 album 'A Night On The Town'. BROWNSVILLE STATION's 1974 hit 'Smokin' In The Boys Room', unfortunately their sole hit, made it big in both the UK and USA, reaching no. 3 in their homeland and selling over two million copies. Both 'I'm The Leader Of The Gang' and 'Kings Of The Party' fared well on radio but the band could not repeat the formula of their smash. The band's final line-up circa 1979 comprised Coda, Lutz, Weck and Bruce Nazarian (a.k.a. 'Beezer').

BROWNSVILLE STATION's hit 'Smokin' In The Boys Room' was given a second lease of life when MȪTLEY CRÜE made it into a huge international hit in the 80's. In later years Cib Koda made a name for himself as a Rock journalist. Musically, he switched from the Rock sound he that had made him famous and delivered a series of solo Blues and Rock n' roll outings including 1994's 'Abba Dabba Dabba: A Bananza Of Hits' on Schoolkids Records, 'Box Lunch' on J-Bird Records in 1997 and 2000's 'Noise Monkeys'. Sadly, Koda, following a period on kidney dialysis, died on 1st July 2000 at the age of 51.

Michael Lutz opened his own Tazmania Studios in Ann Arbor. He would act as producer for UGLY during 2005.
