Biography
Not to be confused with the Canadian wrestler of the same stage name! Guitarist ZAKK WYLDE had shot to international prominence replacing JAKE E. LEE in the OZZY OSBOURNE band. When the mighty Oz decided to temporarily retire from touring Wylde formed a band to go out on the road in 1993 which included former RONDINELLI and WHITE LION bassist James LoMenzo, erstwhile ANTHRAX, WHITE LION and BLACKTHORNE drummer Greg D'Angelo and keyboard player Kevin Jones. The guitarist even got to support his heroes LYNYRD SKYNYRD the same year.
Following his Southern flavoured banjo totin' PRIDE & GLORY band and a short touring stint with the legendary ALLMAN BROTHERS he issued his mellower solo album 'Book Of Shadows'. Drums came courtesy of JOE WALSH and CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG man Joe Vitale and bass from PRIDE & GLORY colleague Joe LoMenzo. After briefly re-uniting with OZZY OSBOURNE and flirting with GUNS N' ROSES Wylde created the much rawer edged BLACK LABEL SOCIETY for the debut 'Sonic Brew' album.
The guitarist was signed up for his big screen debut forming part of the fictitious Metal band for the Mark Wahlberg movie 'Metal God'. The guitarist, alongside 'band' members actor Mark Wahlberg, BONHAM drummer Jason Bonham and DOKKEN bassist Jeff Pilson, would grace the big screen in 2001 for the fictitious STEEL DRAGON for the movie renamed 'Rock Star'. With a combination of musicians that strong the lure to record STEEL DRAGON material for the movie was irresistible and the subsequent 'Rock Star' soundtrack CD duly featured six STEEL DRAGON tracks with Wylde performing.
Wylde also is credited with a guest spot on BRITNY FOX's 'Bite Down Hard' album and on C.P.R.'s 1993 eponymous album.
Wylde rejoined the OZZY OSBOURNE band in November 2000 featuring on the subsequent 'Down To Earth' album. This move would not stall his ongoing BLACK LABEL SOCIETY career though.
On January 17th of 2002 the guitarist would land the honour of performing the US national anthem in front of a capacity crowd at upfront of a basketball game held in Los Angeles. Much of the year would be spent on the road with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY as part of the 'Ozzfest' extravaganza. The sports connection continued with Wylde forming up a one off band in league with his erstwhile OZZY OSBOURNE as well as ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Inez with ROB ZOMBIE drummer John Tempesta serving as backing band for the world champion Anaheim Angels first baseman Scott Spezio for a performance on Fox Sports Net's 'The Best Damn Sports Show Period!' in November.
A much prized possession returned into Wylde's hands that same month. His signature Les Paul Bullseye guitar had gone missing in 2000. Whilst en route from Dallas to Houston, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY were pulled over due to their truck's back doors being open, only to discover two guitars were missing. One was duly recovered but Wylde's favourite Bullseye had disappeared. Upon its return it would be learned the fabled instrument had travelled through a number of Dallas pawn shops before an observant Jerry Weisenger had noticed the 'ZW' initials on the pick ups whilst cleaning it.
In early 2005 Wylde's status was recognised by the collectors market as KnuckleBonz Inc. produced a limited edition figurine of the guitarist. The $99 'Zakk Wylde Guitar Hero' figure, each hand numbered and mounted on a wooden base, came complete with his signature black and white Bullseye Gibson Les Paul.
