Biography

Blues infused post-Grunge outfit CANDLEBOX, created in Seattle, Washington during November of 1991, were virtually guaranteed media exposure by being one of the first signing to megastar MADONNA's Maverick label. Initially the group had gone by the title UNCLE DUKE.

In somewhat of a classic rags to riches fable the band, taking their title from a lyric in Australian act MIDNIGHT OIL's track 'Tin Legs And Tin Mines', cut a winning demo which had been financed by pawning off the band's precious gear. The group comprised vocalist Kevin Martin, a veteran of local acts NYPD, DALI'S OPERA and SOCIAL SMASH, the TOXX IRAE and ASYLUM credited guitarist Peter Klett, ex-DEAD END bassist Bardi Martin and drummer Scott Mercado.

Fortunately the hype justified the final outcome and the debut CANDLEBOX album scored well with record buyers and critics. The album, produced by Kelly Gray of QUEENSRYCHE repute and Jon Plum, steadily crept up the American charts into the top ten surpassing the million sales mark along the way. With both 'You' and 'Far Behind' scoring well on mainstream radio and MTV. 'Far Behind' in particular proved tenacious, entering the Billboard charts in July of 1993 and maintaining its presence there for a full six month run. With a full two years of road work to their credit by the time the inaugural album had exhausted itself CANDLEBOX were looking at triple platinum sales in the USA with a further million on the international market.

The follow up 'Lucy', another Kelly Gray and Jon Plum production credit, charted high but its stay in the charts was fleeting. Ex-CANDLEBOX guitarist Aaron Seravo created DIAMOND STAR HALO in 1995 with former PEARL JAM drummer Dave Krusen. Drummer Scott Mercado left the band in 1997 and was replaced by Dave Krusen for recording of the 1998 Ron Nevison produced 'Happy Pills' album. Although much more in keeping musically with the smash debut 'Happy Pills' failed to lift the band to their previous level of success.

In July of 1998 THERMADORE and former RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS guitarist Robbie 'Spider' Allen superseded Klett. Both drummer Dave Krusen and bassist Bardi Martin left the band in 1999, the latter to concentrate on a degree in History and was replaced for tour work by DIG man Rob Redick. Sitting in on the drums for live work would be the UGLY KID JOE, AMEN, BLACK SABBATH and WRATHCHILD AMERICA credited Shannon Larkin.

Erstwhile drummer Scott Mercado founded DECHAVAN with former PRINCESS PANG vocalist Jeni Foster. CANDLEBOX's former frontman returned in late 2002 with KEVIN MARTIN & THE HIWATTS and the album 'The Possibility of Being'. The classic CANDLEBOX line-up, Kevin Martin, Peter Klett, Bardi Martin and Scott Mercado, reunited to embark on a three-month US tour beginning on 1st July. Further evelvement saw the introduction of rhythm guitarist Sean Hennesey in 2006. Bardi Martin also returned on bass.

The album 'Into The Sun' was produced by Ron Aniello and released on 22nd July 2008 via the Silent Majority Group. The first new record in ten years from CANDLEBOX, sold more than 14,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at no. 32 on the national Billboard album chart.iTunes purchasers scored an extra exclusive track, 'The Answer'.

CANDLEBOX's 2008 line-up featured three of the founding four members, with bass player Bardi Martin having been replaced by Adam Kury. The DVD 'Alive In Seattle' arrived in September.
