Biography

Belton, Temple, Texas based Rock outfit. FLYLEAF was assembled in 2000 when frontwoman Lacey Mosley pitched her song compositions on drummer James Culpepper. The singer had endured a troubled background up to this point, having been ejected from her mother's house in Arlington, Texas at the age of sixteen and relocating to Gulfport, Mississippi to reside with her grandparents. Joining a school band as bassist she elevated herself to the position of frontwoman. Depression led to a near suicide attempt, avoided when her grandmother insisted she attend church. Mosley returned to Arlington, joined a band, then moved on to Temple where she met James Culpepper.

Shortly afterwards they recruited guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann, both members of a local outfit that had recently folded billed SPOROS. By coincidence, Bhattacharya and Hartmann had previously auditioned Mosley for SPOROS but had turned her down. At first the group took on the title LISTEN. Two bassists went through the ranks until in 2002, bassist Pat Seals, previously of THE GROVE, enrolled as the formative title of PASSERBY was adopted. Signing with booking agency Runt Entertainment PASSERBY's prodigious gig tally soon tallied over 100 shows.

Local supports to the likes of FISHBONE and BOWLING FOR SOUP in 2003, led to a New York city showcase arranged by RCA Records. Although the major label rejected the band, a representitive from Octane Records had also witnessed the showcase and offered FLYLEAF a deal, this being formalised in January 2004. The revised title FLYLEAF was adopted after the dedicatory blank page in a book.

FLYLEAF put in a spot at the annual South by Southwest music conference in Austin during 2004 and a show backing EVANESCENCE at the Engine Room in Houston on March 4th that year led to the recording of their 2005 debut EP for Octane. 'Flyleaf', recorded in Seattle, was produced by the esteemed team of Rick Parasher and Brad Cook. Live promotion was to witness guest slots to the likes of 3 DOORS DOWN, BREAKING BENJAMIN, STAIND and SALIVA. In the autumn of 2005 FLYLEAF convened in Los Angeles with producer Howard Benson to craft a full-length album. Ryan White of RESIDENT HERO and DAVE NAVARRO of JANE'S ADDICTION guested in the studio. Also called 'Flyleaf', the record was released in the USA on October 4th.

On April 12th 2006, FLYLEAF gave their live television debut, with renditions of 'All Around Me' and 'I'm So Sick', on Fuse TV's Daily Download. On July 10th logged their first network television appearance, performing 'Fully Alive' and 'I'm So Sick' on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Both these tracks scored favourably on radio and benefitted from promotional videos. Summer road work had FLYLEAF included on the KORN headed 'Family Values' touring package flanking DEFTONES, STONE SOUR, DIR EN GREY, BURY YOUR DEAD, DEADSY, 10 YEARS and BULLETS AND OCTANE.

FLYLEAF formed up the 2006 US 'Music As A Weapon' dates commencing November 15th in Providence, Rhode Island and concluding on December 22nd in Madison, Wisconsin, alongside DISTURBED, STONE SOUR and NONPOINT. The group partnered with STONE SOUR and support FOREVER NEVER for UK dates in March 2007.

In 2008 FLYLEAF contributed a version of 'What's This?' to the 'Nightmare Revisited' album, a collection of reworked songs from the soundtrack to Tim Burton's 1993 movie 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'.
