Biography

Highly respected guitarist Stevie Salas shot into the limelight when, whilst working in a Los Angeles recording studio, famed Funk guru GEORGE CLINTON requested his services on his 1986 'R&B Skeletons In The Closet' album. Salas had started his musical journey as a member of San Diego high school act THIS KIDS, this unit issuing two EPs. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1985, enrolling into George Clinton's band that same year. Media exposure was to guarantee a string of high profile session commissions including EDDIE MONEY, THE TUBES, ANDY TAYLOR and even WAS (NOT WAS) as well as his unaccredited contribution to the hit movie 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure'. To top it all Salas toured America as part of ROD STEWART's 1988 live band.

After this tour, Salas contracted with Island Records and duly put together his own act, STEVIE SALAS COLORCODE, with bassist C.J. DeVillar, who was previously with BANG BANG and DEAR MR. PRESIDENT, and drummer Winston A. Watson. The Funk laden debut, issued in 1990 and including the radio hit 'The Harder They Come', hit the mark on a Rock audience just beginning to wake up to the genre. Touring in North America as support to JOE SATRIANI was followed by British dates with 24-7 SPYS.

With media backing and a commendable debut under his belt Salas was dealt a heavy blow when Island Records were bought up by Polygram, shedding all of Island's rock acts in the process. Retaining their Japanese deal, along with a sizable fan following, the band released a collection of demos and alternative takes titled 'Stuff' in late 1991 and the live 'Bootleg Like A Mug', the latter featuring takes on JIMI HENDRIX's 'Little Wing' and 'Hey Joe'.

Salas united in 1992 with veteran ex JIMI HENDRIX'S BAND OF GYPSYS drummer Buddy Miles and Bootsy Collins for a new band THIRD EYE releasing the 'Hardware' album the same year.

A return to STEVIE SALAS COLORCODE prompted the 'Stevie Salas Presents The Electric Pow Wow' 1993 album of obscure cover versions. The record included a myriad of guests including ZAKK WYLDE of the OZZY OSBOURNE band, Slim Jim Phantom of the STRAY CATS, Tom Peterson and Rick Neilsen of CHEAP TRICK and Matt Sorum of GUNS N' ROSES.

A stint as live guitarist for TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY followed. Further collusions included work with SASS JORDAN for her 'Rats' album before a STEVIE SALAS COLORCODE effort 'Back From The Living'. Ex 24-7 SPYS bassist Rick Skatore, former PRIDE AND GLORY / SASS JORDAN drummer Brian Tichy and bassist T.M. Stevens augmented De Villar and Watson.

Salas spent a considerable portion of 1995 touring with SASS JORDAN in a group that also featured drummer Taylor Hawkins, who later worked with ALANIS MORISSETTE and the FOO FIGHTERS. Contracting anew with Polygram Records, Salas founded yet another band, this time working with Bernard Fowler, entitled NICKLEBAG in 1996. He guested on PHIL CHRISTIAN's 1997 record 'No Prisoners'.

Ex-member De Villar featured on ex GUNS N' ROSES guitarist GILBY CLARKE's 1997 album 'The Hangover' whilst Watson would also later work with the guitarist.

Salas bounced back stronger than ever with a raw live album recorded in Paris, his band also featuring bassist Melvin Brennon Jr. and drummer Brian Tichy. The album saw versions of the seminal KISS cut 'Detroit Rock City', NIRVANA's 'Drain You' and JAMES BROWN's 'Sex Machine'. Tichy later joined FOREIGNER, B.A.L.L. and OZZY OSBOURNE.

The man's 1995 studio work 'Alter Native' was swiftly followed by a compilation dubbed 'Seoul Power'. Initially only released in Korea by the Sampony label, would come as a double CD set cleverly assembled to present a 'Wild' side, a 'Mild' side and a 'Live' side. It would be reissued internationally as 'Sol Power' in 1999. Also in 1997 Polystar in Japan released 'All That...And Born To Mack', a contractual live album culled from a previous video airing.

1998's 'Viva La Noise' furthered the man's reputation, the record having ex PEARL JAM drummer Dave Abbruzzee in the fold now and Jeffrey Connors and Carmine Rojas on bass. Noted Japanese keyboard session man Rei Atsumi also contributes as does Sass Jordan on vocals.

As Salas' November 2001 studio album 'Shape Shifter' arrived in Japanese stores his repute would land him yet another high exposure task as live guitarist for none other than MICK JAGGER.

The 2004 offering 'Soulblasters Of The Universe' featured studio guests JERRY CANTRELL, Bootsy Collins, T.M. Stevens, Brian Tichy and RICHIE KOTZEN. A remix collection, 'The Soulblasters Of The Universe Cosmic Fluties A Party Mix For Underdog', followed. Salas guested on Italian singer CHRIS CATENA's 2005 solo album 'Discovery - Return of the Galactic Freakboy'.

Salas returned in December 2006 with the Japanese release 'Be What It Is'. Guests included drummer TK and Koshi Inaba from B'Z, Matt Sorum, of VELVET REVOLVER and GUNS N' ROSES, guitarist RICHIE KOTZEN from MR. BIG and POISON, drummer Brian Tichy of the BILLY IDOL band, SLASH'S SNAKEPIT, GILBY CLARKE and PRIDE & GLORY and Dave Abbruzzese.

Work with mainstream Pop artists would see Salas acting as musical director on projects for Jordin Sparks, Justin Timberlake, David Cook and DAUGHTRY. In 2008 he would score producer credits for veteran Aussie rockers THE SCREAMING JETS.

The STEVIE SALAS COLORCODE returned in July 2009 with a fresh album 'Set It On Blast!!' Asian concerts that August were fulfilled by a trio counting Salas, bassist Jara Slapbak and drummer Matt Sherrod.
