Biography
Allentown, Pennsylvania Progressive Metal band SHADOW GALLERY was previously known as SORCEROR, an 80's cover band specialising in the more intricate traditional Rock sounds of artists such as RUSH and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN on the club circuit. SORCEROR comprised vocalist Mike Baker, guitarist Ron Evans, bass player Carl Cadden-James and drummer John Coonie. In 1985 the band inducted Chris Ingles on second guitar, maneuvering him to the role of keyboard player when guitarist Brendt Allman enrolled later that same year. The group adopted an increasing repertoire of original material but were to lose Ingles along the way.
A band demo reached Mike Varney, head of Shrapnel Records and at that time in the process of establishing a new Progressive Rock label Magna Carta. SORCEROR shed Ron Evans and took on the new title of SHADOW GALLERY. A further demo session secured contracts with Magna Carta in August of 1991.
The debut album, that featured session drummer Ben Timely, was released to a lukewarm response and only saw distribution in Europe and Japan, but by second attempt 1995's 'Carved In Stone', with the addition of second guitarist Gary Wehrkamp of THE BOXTOPS, the band was beginning to make headway. However, drummer Kevin Soffera quit just after the record's release. The band devoted time to recording material for a slew of tribute albums. SHADOW GALLERY committed their version of 'Time' to the PINK FLOYD offering 'The Moon Revisited' as well as contributions to the GENESIS tribute 'Supper's Ready' and the YES homage 'Tales Of Yesterday'. The group would also forge links with DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy and MR. BIG's Billy Sheehan to cut tracks for a RUSH tribute 'Working Man'.
September 1998's 'Tyranny' concept album, which saw the introduction of drummer Joe Nevolo, sees a guest appearance by ROYAL HUNT's D.C. Cooper. Drums were in the hands of Joe Nevolo. Toward the close of that year SHADOW GALLERY became involved in piecing together a brand new outfit in union with James LaBrie of DREAM THEATER fame entitled MULLMUZZLER. These sessions, titled 'Keep It To Yourself' surfaced through the Magna Carta label during mid 1999. Baker's talents would also be on hand for the 'Leonardo Da Vinci- The Absolute Man' concept album.
In 2000 Gary Wehrkamp would session on the 'Flight of the Universal Migrator' album by the leading Dutch concept band AYREON, featuring on the track 'Through the Worm Hole'. Whilst working on material for a new record entitled 'Legacy' the band members would divide their time to afford space for a second MULLMUZZLER project.
Wehrkamp also donated his skills to the Progressive Rock tour de force EXPLORERS CLUB album 'Raising The Mammoth' in 2002. Still maintaining his SHADOW GALLERY role, in February of 2004 Gary Wehrkamp established a fresh project entitled ALFA-DOG with vocalist D.C. COOPER of SILENT FORCE and ROYAL HUNT alongside drummer Mark Zonder of FATES WARNING repute. Later that same year SHADOW GALLERY signed to InsideOut Music for the album 'Room Five'.
Arjen Lucassen of AYREON recorded a guest appearance for the SHADOW GALLERY album 'Room V' in the Spring of 2005. Gary Wehrkamp donated guitar solos to the 2006 LALU album 'Temporal'. The guitarist then involved himself with AMARAN'S PLIGHT, a self-described "textbook Symphonic Progressive Metal" project featuring vocalist D.C. COOPER, ex-ROYAL HUNT and SILENT FORCE, bassist Kurt Barabas, from UNDER THE SUN, and drummer Nick D'Virgilio, of SPOCK'S BEARD.
Michael Baker suffered a fatal heart attack on 29th October 2008. He was 45 years old.
Gary Wehrkamp featured on the ROSWELL SIX project, unveiled in 2009 as an ambitious Progressive Rock project conceived by international bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson, manifesting itself with the album 'Terra Incognita: Beyond The Horizon' released by Prog Rock Records.
