MASTERS OF REALITY

Biography

MASTERS OF REALITY had first formed in Syracuse, New York in 1981. It wasn't until the quartet recorded a four or five song demo that fell into the hands of Def American supremo Rick Rubin that they gained the keen ear of a record label. Going for a distinctly natural retro vibe MASTERS OF REALITY debuted in 1989 with Rick Rubin produced eponymous album. Despite being titled after a BLACK SABBATH album the band leant heavily on 70s sounds with a laid back Blues-groove feel. As such MASTERS OF REALITY are generally acknowledged to have established a precedent for the later wave of Stoner Rock outfits. MASTERS OF REALITY were somewhat out of step with the then revailing Hard Rock trends but this influence has certainly been acknowledged by artists seeking out the services of frontman Chris Goss as a producer.

Surprisingly, Chris Goss walked out on the band in the midst of an American tour. The frontman took the band name with him and pulled in ex-SHRAPNEL / IGGY POP guitarist Daniel Ray and drummer Jon Leamy. Harrington and Lodovico meantime founded THE BOGEYMEN during 1991 releasing the 'There's No Such Thing As...' album.

Quite amazingly veteran Goss was able to crystalize his retro leanings as CREAM drummer Ginger Baker joined in September of 1990 MASTERS OF REALITY for 1993's 'Sunrise On The Sufferbus'. Despite critical acclaim for the album proposed tours were shelved when Baker departed.

Goss delved into the world of production, being heavily involved with the highly influential KYUSS, prior to pulling MASTERS OF REALITY back together again for a scarce live album 'How High The Moon- Live At The Viper Room'. New members were guitarist Brendan McNichol, drummer Victor Indrezzo and keyboard player Chris Johnson. Goss also scored a production credit on STONE TEMPLE PILOTS 'Tiny Music- Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop' album and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.

MASTERS OF REALITY issued a new album 'Welcome To The Western Lodge' in 1999. A European tour found Goss backed by McNichol, Leamy, bassist Paul Powell and EARTHLINGS keyboard player Mathias Schnnberger. However, this album would not surface in America until a belated release some years later by Spitfire Records, in different sleeve artwork, addressed the balance. Back in America Goss united with ex-CULT vocalist Ian Astbury for an acoustic set at the Tibetan Independence festival.

Goss continued his production work with recent credits including IAN ASTBURY's 2000 solo album, UNIDA, SOULWAX and SLOBURN. Promoting the new studio album 'Deep In The Hole' in the autumn of 2001 Goss put in an evening of solo music at the Los Angeles Knitting Factory venue. Guest musicians on the day would include Peter Perdichizzi of THE FLYS, Nick Lucero of THE FLYS and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, Josh Homme, MARK LANEGAN, Brendon McNichol and Roxy Saint. MASTERS OF REALITY would cut a live album compiled from dates on their December 2001 European dates for September 2002 release entitled 'Flak And Flight'. The recording band saw Goss joined by drummer John Leamy, bassist Nick Oliveri and guitarist Josh Homme with a guest appearance by MARK LANEGAN on the track 'High Noon Amsterdam'.

The QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE connection was strengthened in 2002 when Goss was revealed to be accompanying the band on the road as touring guitarist. Somehow Goss made space to produce tracks for former HOLE and SMASHING PUMPKIN's bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur as well as Nick Oliveri's MONDO GENERATOR.

Goss alsi unveiled plans for a solo album in the works, offering up a series of projected titles such as 'Baboon And McMusic' and 'Peanuts And Orange Juice'. McNichol would also be found to be working with ex-PRONG and present KILLING JOKE drummer Ted Parsons in Ambient duo DRONE.

During November of 2002 it would be learned that Goss had struck up a band union with former MARILYN MANSON bassist Twiggy Ramirez entitled SNOWBALLS. Goss would add to his production credits the following year, working with the British band BEELINE MATCHBOX DISASTER at Sound City studios in Van Nuys, California in October prior to engaging with Norwegian Stoners WE.

Fabled Stoner Doom godfather Wino of THE OBSESSED featured as a guest on the track 'Jindalee Jindalie' included on the mellow 2004 MASTERS OF REALITY offering 'Give Us Barabbas'.

It would be reported on 24th December 2004 that Chris Goss and been taken seriously ill, "suffering from a severe internal infection", and hospitalised.
