Biography

Created by in Queens, New York during 1987 by bassist Bruno Ravel, New York's DANGER DANGER enjoyed a fair amount of success with their 1989 debut album. However, the band entered into years of struggle once record company politics, a split with their original lead singer and the onslaught of Grunge and Alternative Rock began to make a serious impression on the youth of North America.

Ravel, whose father was a violinist in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, was a one-time pupil at the Julliard College of Music in New York where he had cut his musical teeth playing the cello. He was very briefly a member of WHITE LION prior to the band getting a deal with Atlantic Records as a replacement for Dave Spitz. He quit after believing that he wouldn't be able to contribute in a songwriting capacity, an area dominated by the partnership of band leaders singer MIKE TRAMP and guitarist Vito Bratta. Ravel jumped ship to replace BILLY SHEEHAN in the Buffalo, New York based TALAS. Unfortunately, the bassist wore a shirt given to him by a fan during one gig emblazoned with the slogan 'Billy Who?' Sheehan heard about through the grapevine and promptly laid his claim to the band name and made sure that TALAS could not record any records without him in the group, effectively splitting the band.

Following a touring stint with former FANDANGO and RAINBOW vocalist JOE LYNN TURNER, Bruno decided to put a band of his own together with an old friend from his Queens neighbourhood, drummer Steve West. Recruiting keyboard player Kasey Smith, previously with GET WITH IT, and singer Mike Pont, this union was forged as covers band HOTSHOT in 1983. The HOTSHOT operational in 1986 comprised Mike Pont on lead vocals, SARAYA guitarist Tony Bruno, bassist Bruno Ravel, FOREIGNER and SPYS keyboard player Al Greenwood with SARAYA's Chuck Bonfonte on drums.

During 1987 DANGER DANGER operated as a unit involving Mike Pont, ex-TALAS guitarist Al Pitrelli, Ravel and West. This formation only managed a handful of shows. When Pont journeyed to Los Angeles, to form THE GANGSTERS OF LOVE, Ravel, West and Smith recruited former LUSH and PROPHET drummer Ted Poley in a frontman capacity, DANGER DANGER became a going concern. The quest for a suitable guitarist proved difficult at first, former MEGADETH guitarist Jeff Young was one of many who auditioned.

DANGER DANGER would sign to the newly formed CBS affiliate Imagine Records by Lennie Petze. The band's Lance Quinn produced debut album, issued in June 1989, was recorded with SARAYA guitarist Tony Rey, an associate of Ravel's in JOE LYNN TURNER's band, with Texan ANDY TIMMONS taking up permanent residency towards the conclusion of recording, just able to contribute a few solo parts.

The band toured extensively with the likes of WARRANT, FASTER PUSSYCAT, KISS, ALICE COOPER and EXTREME. Steve West actually played drums for FASTER PUSSYCAT in Omaha, Nebraska following FASTER PUSSYCAT drummer Mark Michaels being arrested for heroin possession. Through a combination of touring, radio airplay and MTV exposure the debut album sold around 400'000 copies in America. Capitalising on the momentum, a concert EP, 'Down And Dirty Live', was issued that same year. Featuring a cover version of RICK DERRINGER's 'Rock 'N' Roll Hoochie Koo', these tracks were produced by Lennie Petze and recorded at L'Amour in Brooklyn and Bangles in Denver, Colorado.

The band's second album, October 1991's 'Screw It', was recorded using Dutch producer Erwin Musper as a result of Ravel and West admiring Canadian artist PAUL LAINE's 'Stick It In Your Ear' album on which Musper engineered. The band subsequently recorded the bulk of 'Screw It' at Wisselord Studios in Holland. The intro to the record, 'Ginger Snaps' features a cameo appearance from infamous American porn star Ginger Lynn. Notable studio guests included the EXTREME trio of Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt and Pat Badger.

Having arranged a series of club gigs in Britain to follow up on the success generated by a one-off show at London's Astoria (part of the short lived American Dream series), the tour was pulled. The band instead being offered the support slot on KISS' 1992 European tour after original opening band SLAUGHTER had to decline the invitation

Following the recording of the band's third album, 'Cockroach', a split in the ranks led to the departure of Ted Poley, leading to the album's release date being indefinitely delayed. The former singer created BONE MACHINE, releasing a string of albums starting with 1994's 'Dogs' opus, and subsequently MELODICA. In Christmas 1994, under the solo billing of TED POLEY, the singer launched the irreverent single 'A Letter To Santa (From A Horny 12 yr. Old Boy)'.

With the recruitment of Canadian frontman PAUL LAINE - a cult Hard Rock star in his own right, having released the critically acclaimed 'Stick It In Your Ear' album through Elektra - DANGER DANGER had Poley's successor re-do the vocals on the album. Poley reacted by taking out a lawsuit against his former colleagues preventing the album to be released without his vocals on it. Naturally, tapes of both versions of 'Cockroach' have been widely circulated on the tape trading circuit by the band's fans. The album release would finally be sanctioned in 2001.

Undeterred by the legal wrangling DANGER DANGER soldiered on, although guitarist ANDY TIMMONS was no longer a fixture having departed for a solo career during the uncertainty surrounding 'Cockroach'. Slimmed to a trio of Ravel, West and Laine, the band recorded a brand new album, 'Dawn' released through Low Dice Records, the direction of which reflected the times, the album boasting a very Grunge influenced sound. Touring saw the recruitment of PAUL LAINE BAND bassist SCOTT BROWN. The four stringer would later join the veteran Canadian act TROOPER in 1997.

The band signed to MTM Music for a brand new release late in 1997. The aptly titled 'Four The Hard Way' found the trio of Laine, Ravel and West working together with Timmons and Kasey Smith to record an album that saw a return to the familiar Hard Rock DANGER DANGER had initially made a name for themselves with. The record featured all new songs plus re-recordings of four songs originally written for the shelved 'Cockroach' album.

At the tail end of the year the band toured in Europe opening up for the reformed UFO, although the tour failed to bring them to Britain where they are unarguably more popular than anywhere else in Europe. Playing a forty five minute set the trio of Laine, West and Ravel, augmented by Tony Bruno on guitar, offered up two tracks from the first album, three from 'Screw It', four from 'Four The Hard Way' plus 'Helicopter' from the overlooked 'Dawn'.

Ravel formed WESTWORLD in 1999 together with TNT frontman Tony Harnell, RIOT guitarist Mark Reale and ex-BLUE OYSTER CULT and RAINBOW drummer John O'Reilly. In 2000 ex-member SCOTT BROWN issued a solo album 'Right On' which saw the involvement of TROOPER colleagues and guest lead vocals from Paul Laine.

2001 found DANGER DANGER still operative and promoting the Lance Quinn produced 'Return Of The Great Gildersleeves'. An archive and exclusive live rendition of DANGER DANGER's 'Naughty Naughty' surfaced in 2001 as part of the WDHA radio compilation album 'The Tour Bus- Road Trip'. Paul Laine and guitarist Chris Matheson founded SHUGAAZER in 2002.

The band's website also surprised and delighted longstanding fans when it finally released the shelved 'Cockroach' album. Diplomatically the record offered both Ted Poley and Paul Laine versions of songs. UK tour dates in June of 2003 were scheduled for recording as a live album 'Live & Nude'. Ted Poley returned to the ranks of DANGER DANGER during March of 2004 as the band announced an appearance at the 'Sweden Rock' festival. Meantime, Poley still made time to pursue solo activities on the live front, touting his wares with a band comprising guitarist Steve Massa, Joe Slattery of NORWAY and MELODICA on bass, Charlie Calv of PLEASURE DOME and SHOTGUN SYMPHONY on keyboards and ADRIANGALE's Vic Rivera on the drums. The singer also guested on SEVEN WITCHES guitarist JACK FROST's solo album 'Out In The Cold'.

UK touring in April of 2005 for DANGER DANGER, the band's first gigs in the country in over a decade, saw Rotherham's DEADLINE as support. The band returned to the UK to put in an appearance at the November 'Firefest 2' festival held at Nottingham's Rock City, alongside HAREM SCAREM, POWER QUEST, SARACEN, BALANCE OF POWER, BLUE TEARS and HOUSE OF LORDS.

Also unveiled during 2005 would be the ANDERSEN / LAINE / READMAN project, mentored by ROYAL HUNT keyboard player ANDRE ANDERSEN. The album 'III', issued through the Italian Frontiers label in March 2006, saw vocal duties shared between Paul Laine and David Readman of PINK CREAM 69.

Following an appearance at the UK 'Firefest' event in October 2008 DANGER DANGER set about recording a fresh studio album. 'Revolve' emerged in September 2009.
