DOG EAT DOG

Biography

Hip Hop Rockers DOG EAT DOG founded in 1990 initially as a hobby act from Hardcore mongers MUCKY PUP. The inaugural line up comprised of MUCKY PUP men guitarists Dan Nastasi and Sean Kilkenny, bassist Dave Neabore and a former roadie John Connor on vocals. The debut album's title was a direct pun on the Glam Rock band WARRANT's 'Dog Eat Dog' album. Possibly there could also have been an accidental sales benefit too with retail confusion over the titles, WARRANT's previous album being a platinum seller. Whatever the intention it was an ingenius ploy. UK shows in October of 1993 saw DOG EAT DOG opening for BAD BRAINS.

DOG EAT DOG's fortunes were certainly boosted by the more radical crossover appeal of 1994's Jason Corsaro produced 'All Boro Kings', which featured a guesting Darryl Jenifer of BAD BRAINS. The band enhanced it's mainstream appeal by touring alongside Metal bands such as BIOHAZARD and BAD BRAINS but also crossed bases by gigging with Hip Hop crews such as ONYX.

The 1995 single 'No Fronts' featured a whole slew of remixes and just broke into the British charts. However, DOG EAT DOG's star was ascending so rapidly at this point though that a re-issue some four months later broke the top ten.

During 1996 Brandon Finlay took Maltby's place on the drum stool. Further ructions occurred later the same year when founder member Nastasi quit. The gap was filled by ex-MUCKY PUP bassist Mark DeBacker who took up guitar. The band also drafted saxophonist Scott Mueller. The 1996 'Play Games' album charted in Britain but subsequent singles could not repeat the glory of 'No Fronts' and failed to chart. DOG EAT DOG suffered from a swift media backlash with magazines questioning their street credentials. By 1998 Scott D and De Backer had departed. In downtime Neabore wrote and recorded music for the soundtrack to the 2000 horror movie 'Reel Fear'.

In early 2002 the ex-DOG EAT DOG triumvirate of Dave Neabore, Dan Nastasi and Sean Kilkenny announced the formation of new venture the ALL BORO KINGS in union with erstwhile BLOODHOUND GANG drummer John Milnes. Dave Neabore would also be announced at trying his hand with a further side venture, BAD KARMA. This outfit subsequently evolved into LOW BUZ for a debut EP release.
