Biography
TAKING BACK SUNDAY was initiated in Long Island, New York by guitarist Eddie Reyes, previously of MOVIELIFE and INSIDE, in November 1999. An opening, self-titled six song demo EP, issued in February 2001, featured singer Antonio Longo, guitarist John Nolan, drummer Stevie D. and bassist Jesse Lacey. North Carolina native Adam Lazzara would at first be enrolled as bassist but then switched to the vocal role as Shaun Cooper replaced Lacey, the latter going on to BRAND NEW.
The next crop of TAKING BACK SUNDAY demos, dubbed 'Tell All Your Friends' distributed via I Will End You Records, soon secured a label deal with Victory Records, the band being contracted in December 2001 and resulting in the debut 'Tell All Your Friends' album issued in March 2002. Produced by Sal Villanueva and engineered by Tim Gilles, these sessions were conducted at New Jersey's Big Blue Meanie Recording Studios. After the group had hit up the local Long Island touring circuit just forward of the release 'Tell All Your Friends' would sell over 2,000 copies in its first week of sale. The single 'Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team)' also fared well for the band, giving the album longevity. Momentum was continued with 'The Best Revenge' summer tour alongside RECOVER and MIDTOWN. During this trek Lazzara suffered an accident, falling offstage during MIDTOWN's set, dislocating his hip. Once the singer had recovered, TAKING BACK SUNDAY set out on a further nationwide headline tour. January 2003 US dates would be conducted flanking THE USED.
Their status rose rapidly with gigs nationwide. However, following the Summer 2003 'Takeover' tour both guitarist / vocalist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper exited to form STRAYLIGHT RUN. The band seriously considered throwing in the towel at this juncture. Nevertheless, they duly regrouped, drafting Fred Mascherino on guitar and Matthew Rubano on bass. Jumping back into the fray, the new look TAKING BACK SUNDAY put in TV appearances on the 'Last Call with Carson Daly' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' shows and engaged in Autumn tour dates in union with SAVES THE DAY.
TAKING BACK SUNDAY's second album, July 2004's Lou Giordano produced 'Where You Want To Be', would be promoted by an exhaustive live campaign commencing with a month long run of major US dates as openers to BLINK 1982, CYPRESS HILL and THE USED. The album broke onto the Billboard charts at number 3, selling over 163,000 copies in its first week of sale. The group scored a significant success with the first single lifted from the album, 'A Decade Under The Influence' gaining valuable US radio play and giving the band its first UK chart entry at number 70. Follow up single 'This Photograph Is Proof' generated even greater American airplay. The band's debut UK appearances saw the band packaged with label mates THE HURT PROCESS and RECOVER. TAKING BACK SUNDAY also put in an appearance at the METALLICA headlined Castle Donington 'Download' festival. The group then returned to North America for a headline slot at the 'Vans Warped' tour 10th anniversary trek commencing 25th June in Houston, Texas. With these shows complete TAKING BACK SUNDAY flew back over the Atlantic for their second UK outdoor appearance, at the prestigious Reading festival. In November the group partnered with ATREYU, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, THE VARSITY and LIKE YESTERDAY for a further round of US dates.
The group's 2006 US touring schedule included gigs in April supported by SUICIDE CITY. Third album 'Louder Now', released on April 25th, quite spectacularly debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard charts. The opening single, 'MakeDamnSure', scored a number 48 position on the US charts and number 36 in the UK.
The band notably took part in the two day 'Give It A Name' indoor Rock event schedule in England, performing at Manchester Evening News Arena on April 29th and London Earls Court on April 30th. An onstage accident at the Earls Court show saw Adam Lazzara hitting Matt Rubano, knocking the bassist out cold. The band persevered, pulling in AIDEN's guitarist Angel Ibarra to cover on bass while Rubano was treated. The bassist returned to the stage, sitting down for the duration and sporting a large head bandage and a bloody face. TAKING BACK SUNDAY's next single, 'Twenty-Twenty Surgery' released in August and promoted by a video where Lazzara takes off Johnny Cash, reached number 60 on the UK charts.
TAKING BACK SUNDAY's third single lifted from 'Louder Now, entitled ''Liar (It Takes One To Know One)', hit number 28 on the UK charts. The group partnered with THURSDAY, SENSES FAIL, SAOSIN and UNDEROATH during October for the 'Taste Of Chaos' package tour of New Zealand and Australia.
The group performed at the inaugural UK 'Sonisphere' festival at Knebworth Park in August 2009 headlined by METALLICA, LINKIN PARK, NINE INCH NAILS and HEAVEN AND HELL.
