Biography
Brutal, uncompromising Death Metal act, founded in Buffalo, New York and centred on former RESTHAVEN members guitarist Phil Fasciana and vocalist Brett Hoffmann created in 1987. The initial formation had this pairing allied with second guitarist John Rubin, bass player Mark Van Erp and drummer Mark Simpson. An opening demo session in 1989, involving three tracks 'Injected Sufferage', 'Epileptic Seizure' and 'Violent Offspring', saw a restricted distribution of just 100 cassettes. Another three song set, simply dubbed 'Demo 1990', followed, clinching a contract with Roadracer Records.
Their commercial debut, 'The Ten Commandments', saw delivery in September 1990, although the band had shifted shape, Jeff Juszkiewicz taking Rubin's post and Jason Blachowicz substituting for Van Erp. Roadracer had installed the band in their Florida Death Metal hit factory, Tampa's Morrisound to cut these tracks under the guidance of Scott Burns. General consensus highlighted MALEVOLENT CREATION's obvious affection for Bay Area thrash, the band coming across like an accelerated SLAYER. Setting the group apart, Hoffmann's glass-cutting screeching skills offered an alternative to the by now commonplace growls.
Guitarist Jeff Juszkiewicz parted ways with the band in 1991. Swede Peter Tägtgren had also been a member of MALEVOLENT CREATION and MELTDOWN but would return to Sweden to found HYPOCRISY, initially titled SEDITIOUS. In order to complete a planned American tour with DEVASTATION and DEMOLITION HAMMER the band temporarily pulled in the services of MONSTROSITY guitarist, and former MALEVOLENT CREATION member, John Rubin.
For April 1992's 'Retribution', again hacked out at Morrisound with Scott Burns at the desk, the band utilized the services of the SOLSTICE and ABYSMAL credited guitarist Rob Barrett and drummer Alex Marquez.
'Stillborn', retaining a stable line-up plus the addition of Rubin but now engineered by Mark Pinske, followed suit, in October 1993. However, reviews were unkind for a meandering record that lacked the enthusiastic bite of its forerunners and battled a muddy, reverb drenched production. Naturally MALEVOLENT CREATION still hit the live circuit to promote the record, including a stop at the 'Milwaukee Metalfest', three tracks from which surfaced on a four way split album, 'Live Death', issued via Restless Records in collaboration with CANCER, EXHORDER and SUFFOCATION. In 1994 both Fasciana and Barrett had ensconced themselves in the studio with drummer 'Crazy' Larry Hawke kicking off a side project named HATEPLOW.
By 1995 MALEVOLENT CREATION had parted ways with both their label Roadrunner Records, hooking up with the Pavement label, and vocalist Brett Hoffmann who subsequently busied himself guesting for Swiss act SILENT DEATH. Demos were recorded with bassist Jason Blachowicz handling lead vocals plus ex-DISGORGED, SUFFOCATION and R.I.P. drummer Dave Culross and this formation then put down tracks for the August 1996 offering 'Eternal'. A switch of bases had this album executed at Criteria and Inner Face Studios as a self-produced effort.
The 1997 compilation album 'Joe Black', which comprised rare tracks, demos and a take on SLAYER's 'Raining Blood', was a limited edition release.
MALEVOLENT CREATION's 1997 line-up, which included drummer Derek Roddy (following the tragic death of Crazy Larry in May of that year a fire whilst attempting to save his pet dog), saw the band trimmed down with only Blaschowicz and Fasciana remaining from their origins. Roddy would also session for AURORA BOREALIS and later NILE. Newly installed on guitar would be the CREATURE and PAINGOD credited John Paul Soars for a new MALEVOLENT CREATION studio album, 'In Cold Blood', released in 1997.
Hoffman returned for 1998's 'Fine Art Of Murder'. MALEVOLENT CREATION now comprised of Hoffmann, Fasciana, Barret, bassist Gordon Simms and drummer Dave Culross. Blachowicz, Soars and Roddy would all unite to forge DIVINE EMPIRE releasing the 'Redemption' debut and 'Doomed To Inherit' follow up. Soars would also busy himself further operating with SOLSTICE, BURNER and WYNJARA.
In 2000 MALEVOLENT CREATION drummer Dave Culross aided INCANTION laying down session drums for their 'Infernal Storm' album. The same year found Culross in collusion with Fasciana and Barrett for their HATEPLOW project album 'The Only Law Is Survival'. MALEVOLENT CREATION released the 'Envenomed' album in 2000.
In a display of brotherhood HATEPLOW would support MALEVOLENT CREATION on their February 2001 headlining shows across Europe. Returning from Europe, Hoffmann was arrested upon entry into the United States and imprisoned for parole violation dating back to 1995. The incarceration of their vocalist forced MALEVOLENT CREATION to withdraw from a projected series of American dates planned with MONSTROSITY. This latest incident involving Hoffmann would eventually trigger his removal from the band for a second time, HATE PLOW's Kyle Symons taking the lead vocal mantle in January 2002.
In late 2001 Blachowicz, newly freed from jail after an assault charge, created the female fronted WYKKED WYTCH.
The band would figure as part of of the gargantuan European 'No Mercy' touring festival package in March and April 2002. Also on the billing would be VADER, CATASTROPHIC, DESTROYER 666, HYPOCRISY, DISBELIEF, IMMORTAL and OBSCENITY. Jean-François Dagenais of famed Canadian act KATAKLYSM would also be confirmed as acting as producer for MALEVOLENT CREATION's 2002 'The Will To Kill' album. A scheduled Polish tour in October would see the band heading a billing of with VOMITORY and SEPTIC FLESH.
Former drummer Dave Culross was making news, formulating two extreme Metal ventures. One being an alliance with guitarists Frank Maggio, previously with IRON LUNG, EVIL EYE and SOCIAL DISEASE, and Jason Brennan whilst a separate venture had the sticksman formulating ideas with SLIPKNOT guitarist Mick Thompson.
MALEVOLENT CREATION's new album, 'The Will To Kill', would be unveiled in November. Although Justin DiPinto had handled drums in the studio Ariel Alvarado subsequently assumed the role. Breaking a five year hiatus the band toured the Southern states of the USA as support to CANNIBAL CORPSE in December. MALEVOLENT CREATION continued this run of shows throughout January and February 2003 supported at various stages by BLOODLET, REFLUX, DEAD TO FALL, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and DEEDS OF FLESH.
The band's continuing resurgence would be further progressed as MALEVOLENT CREATION, complete now with NILE drummer Tony Laureano onboard, were confirmed as participants in the April 2003 European 'No Mercy' festivals. The group formed up part of a heavyweight billing comprising TESTAMENT, MARDUK, DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, DEATH ANGEL, PRO-PAIN, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, DARKANE, and CALLENISH CIRCLE. Meantime, erstwhile members Brett Hoffman and Dave Culross were announced as participating in a DEATH tribute album assembled by erstwhile DEATH guitarist JAMES MURPHY.
MALEVOLENT CREATION embarked on their first Brazilian tour since 1991 during July, recording shows for both future DVD and live album use. Jeff Juszkiewicz made a return with his Atlanta based Sludge trio TUALATIN. As MALEVOLENT CREATION renewed ties with Nuclear Blast for a 2004 studio album it would also be announced that drummer Dave Culross had returned to the fold. Scandinavian shows in June saw the band partnering with DYING FETUS.
A pairing of ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION drummers would also be in the news with Alex Marquez reforged links with his former SOLSTICE band mate and guitarist Dennis Munoz in an eighties Power Thrash outfit with a working title APOCALYPSE RISING. The quartet would be completed by second guitarist Willy Medina and bass player Mike Marabell. Meantime, Dave Culross' previously announced band formation PUMMEL, working in league with ex-IRON LUNG and SOCIAL DISEASE guitarist Frank Maggio, saw vocalist Tom Bush, bassist Mark Astrin and second guitarist Steve Seigerman completing the line-up.
MALEVOLENT CREATION's July 2004 'Warkult' opus, recorded at Liquid Ghost Recording Studio in Boca Raton, Florida, included a cover rendition of 'Jack The Ripper' originally by cult Australian band HOBB'S ANGEL OF DEATH. Summer festival appearances across Europe to promote the album included 'Rock Hard', 'With Full Force' and 'Up From The Ground' in Germany, 'Skeleton Bash' in Austria, 'Fury Fest' in France, 'Graspop Metal Meeting' in Belgium and 'Rock the Nations' in Istanbul, Turkey. The band ended up not playing the latter show when the promotorfailed to supply enough tickets for the band to get to the venue.
Further misfortune struck the band when a planned London Underworld headlining show was cancelled as violent storms in the English channel prevented ferry crossings from France. Returning to the USA MALEVOLENT CREATION commenced home turf live work with a 'Warkult' record release party on July 24th at Fort Lauderdale's Culture Room. Meantime, a live album 'Conquering South America', recorded during the band's 2001 tour of Brazil and engineered by KATAKLYSM guitarist Jean-François Dagenais, surfaced in September.
In October 2004 the APOCALYPSE RISING pairing of Alex Marquez and Dennis Munoz allied with MALEVOLENT CREATION founder Phil Fasciana and former MALEVOLENT CREATION drummer Gus Rios in an all new band project. Former MALEVOLENT CREATION singer Brett Hoffmann resurfaced in January 2005, touting a demo from his new band DOWN THE DRAIN. Summer 2005 dates, commencing in Florida during early July, had MALEVOLENT CREATION packaged with ORIGIN, DIVINE EMPIRE and ANIMOSITY. In September MALEVOLENT CREATION made a concert return to Puerto Rico at the Mayaguez University Plaza supported by INFLAMATORY and SEPULCHRAL, being the first time in over a decade the band had played on the island. The following month the band once again underwent changes, losing guitarist Rob Barret to CANNIBAL CORPSE and bassist Gordon Simms but swiftly replacing them with returning members John Rubin on guitar and Jason Blachowicz on bass.
European shows in January and February 2006 witnessed strong backing from BOLT THROWER, NIGHTRAGE and NECROPHAGIST. For these gigs the group welcomed back original vocalist Brett Hoffmann. The band joined a heavyweight casting of CARPATHIAN FOREST, ROTTING CHRIST, HARM, INCANTATION and NEURAXIS for the 'Domination' European tour, commencing on February 14th at the Warsaw Progresja venue in Poland before hitting Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, France and Holland.
MALEVOLENT CREATION, as a unit comprising vocalist Brett Hoffmann, guitarists Jon Rubin and Phil Fasciana, bass player Jason Blachowicz and drummer Dave Culross, set to work on fresh album tracks, dubbed 'Doomsday X', during January 2007. Mick Thomson, guitarist for SLIPKNOT, also contributed a guitar solo for the song 'Deliver My Enemy'.
OBITUARY and MALEVOLENT CREATION partnered for February 2009 Central American concerts.
Guitarist Phil Fasciana allegedly came close to death on 2nd July at a convenience store in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale when he claimed he had confronted a gunman described as a "homeless crackhead". Upon entering the store, to buy chocolate milk, Fasciana stated he was shot at four times. Luckily all these bullets missed the musician, who tackled the gunman. In an act of self-defence Fasciana shot the assailant twice in the head, killing him. However, once aired online, the veracity of these statements were questioned by police and news agencies.
UPON INFLICTION and WYKKED WYTCH credited guitarist Gio Geraca played bass for MALEVOLENT CREATION for tours of South America and Mexico.
