Biography
New Jersey Rockers PROPHET's self-titled 1985 debut album, released on the Total Experience imprint, made waves on the international melodic Rock scene. In its formative stages, the group featured Wiliam Runco on guitar. Founders guitarist Scott Metaxas and keyboard player Joe Zujkowski were previously members of ICARIAN and TOM FULLER'S ROCK CITY. Guitarist Ken Dubman, drummer Bob Butterfield and singer Marc Hoffman completed the initial roster and PROPHET quickly gained momentum on the local covers circuit, tackling songs by TOTO, QUEEN, BOSTON, JOURNEY and STYX. As the move towards original material was made, Hoffman was superseded by Dean Fasano and Butterfield by Ted Poley prior to the first album. Both Hoffman and Butterfield duly forged RACE.
PROPHET brought in former SURGIN vocalist Russell Arcara for the follow up 'Cycle Of The Moon' effort. The band also drafted drummer Michael Sterlacci who took over from Poley on the second album. Poley had quit PROPHET following a row and swiftly hooked up with DANGER DANGER and BONE MACHINE taking a frontman's role.
A third album, entitled 'Recycled', emerged in 1991 with a line-up of Arcara, Ken Dubman, Scott Metaxas, Joe Zujkowski, the TT QUICK credited Dave Dipietro on guitar and Jim Callahan on drums. Karl Cochran, later to team up with Arcara in the modestly titled ARCARA played acoustic guitar on the cover of DAN HARTMAN's 'Sides' and supplies backing vocals alongside fellow New Jerseyites like LYNCH MOB's Robert Mason. In a surprise move of Dave Dipietro and Scott Metaxas joined Thrashers NUCLEAR ASSAULT in 1992.
Metaxas took a musical left turn to join noted Thrashers NUCLEAR ASSAULT. In early 2005 Russell Arcara announced a new band project billed THE WAY in union with INTRUDER guitarist Stephen DeAcutis and keyboard player Charlie Calv, the latter a scene veteran of SHOTGUN SYMPHONY, SKIN TAG and THE BRONX CASKET CO. UK label Z Records re-issued both 'Cycle Of The Moon' and 'Recycled' in June 2005.
In later years band members Russell Arcara, Ken Dubman, Scott Metaxas and Jim Callahan forged a tribute band entitled EDGAR CAYCE (a renowned "prophet").
Metaxas became co-owner of Wayne Manor Studios in Hillsborough with Paul Crook of ANTHRAX and MEAT LOAF repute, scoring credits with SEBASTIAN BACH and S.O.D., as well as holding down a day job as sales manager with Somerset and Hunterdon counties for Countrywide Home Loans. Ken Dubman owned and operated a charter fishing boat out of Atlantic Highlands and also played in the Blues band ROCKET 88. Jim Callahan worked for a computer graphic design company as well as owning his own software company.
Wounded Bird Records re-issued the 'Cycle Of The Moon' album in 2009.
