Biography
Bellville, New Jersey Alt-Rock act established in 2001 by lead singer Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier. The pair crafted an inaugural song, 'Skylines And Turnstiles', prior to inviting in guitarist Ray Toro, then bassist Mikey Way (Gerard's brother) and guitarist Frank Iero. Raising a local following on the live circuit MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE caught the attention of New York's Eyeball Records in 2002, cementing a deal which resulted in the opening album 'I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love', produced by THURSDAY frontman Geoff Rickly. Underground reaction from fans and media plus radio play garnered by singles 'Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us' and 'Vampires Will Never Hurt You', was such that Warner Bros. soon snapped the band up.
The June 2004 MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE debut album, 'Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge' produced by Howard Benson, would enter the US Billboard charts at number 103, selling over 11,000 copies in its first week of release. The single 'I'm Not Okay (I Promise)' secured a Billboard placing at number 86 but went top twenty in the UK. Follow up 'Helena' reached number 33 and 20 in the UK. A significant line-up change saw Chicago native Bob Bryar taking over on drums from founder member Matt Pelissier. The band teamed up with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and THE USED for the 'Taste Of Chaos' US tour in February 2005. That May the band launched into further North American gigs as guests to GREEN DAY prior to inclusion on the Summer 'Vans warped' tour and UK gigs at the IRON MAIDEN headlined Leeds and Reading festivals.
'Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge' remained doggedly in the US charts and by September 2005 had climbed up to number 28. On the 15th the group engaged in its first major headlining tour, commencing at the Columbus PromoWest Pavilion, seeing ALKALINE TRIO plus REGGIE AND THE FULL EFFECT as support. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE included a track 'To The End" (RnR Cheryl Mix)' on the 'Underworld: Evolution' movie soundtrack.
The October 2006 single 'Welcome To The Black Parade' topped the UK charts. The album 'The Black Parade' just fell shy of the US number one spot, selling over 240,000 copies in its first week of US sales to land at number 2.
