Biography
Formed, phoenix-like, from the ashes of VINNIE VINCENT INVASION by vocalist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum in 1989. Strum had also been involved in the late 70's act BADAXE and with the short lived but influential MODERN DESIGN as well as carving his name into the Rock history books by hooking OZZY OSBOURNE up with the legendary late guitar hero Randy Rhoads. Guitarist Tim Kelly had very briefly been a member of Heavy Metal bands ODIN and the Ann Boleyn fronted HELLION.
SLAUGHTER immediately hit the big time in 1990 with the release of their debut album 'Stick It To Ya' and the smash hit single 'Up All Night'. This debut was followed by the even more successful 'Fly To The Angels', both reaping the benefits of heavy exposure on MTV in the United States where the group was to tour with KISS. Indeed, SLAUGHTER would go on to score no less than eight MTV no. 1 videos and 'Stick It To Ya' would eventually gain double platinum status. Incidentally, the model on the debut album cover was briefly married to RATT guitarist Robbin Crosby.
The band had convened in Los Angeles whilst Slaughter and Strum were producing demos for the North Carolina outfit WHITE HEAT (who became FIREHOUSE once signed to Epic Records). The duo met guitarist Tim Kelly, a veteran of a number of local bands in Philadelphia at Cherokee Studios. Houston resident Blas Elias, previously a member of BLACK SHEEP, was then added after auditioning for the position.
Due to the band's success on the road Chrysalis opted to release a live mini album, appropriately titled 'Stick It To Ya Live' and containing five tracks.
SLAUGHTER toured America during 1992 opening for OZZY OSBOURNE in support of 'The Wild Life' album. Strum's services were later hastily employed in the VINCE NEIL band when an inter band fist fight saw the rapid mid tour exit of previous incumbent Robbie Crane.
As the Grunge explosion decimated the 'Hair band' genre SLAUGHTER wisely stuck to their guns continuing to knock out bona fide Hard Rock albums that sustained them through the lean years. The group would also display their stoicism on the road, maintaining constant annual touring year on year.
1997 album 'Revolution' saw the band seemingly drifting into a 60's era Psychedelia direction. 'Revolution' was recorded at their own De La Casa Studios in Las Vegas and the CD version features an enhanced multi-media portion featuring video footage, photos, bios, demo recordings and live material compiled by Elias and Strum. The first single choice from 'Revolution' was intended to be the opening track 'American Pie'.
Sadly, Tim Kelly was killed in a car accident on February 5, 1998. Kelly, who was driving from Baghdad, Arizona to Kingman, was involved in a collision with an on-coming semi-articulated truck that had jackknifed in front of him. Kelly was taken to hospital but died from head injuries sustained in the accident. Kelly had played his last shows with SLAUGHTER at Detroit's Harpo's club on November 14 and 15, 1997.
SLAUGHTER were expected to continue, although reports suggested that Tim Kelly would not be permanently replaced. As it transpired Jeff Blando eventually fulfilled the position. As such, the band put in a series of shows toward the end of 1998 as part of 'The Rock Never Stops' American tour alongside FIREHOUSE, WARRANT and QUIET RIOT.
Blando also filled in as live guitarist for the 2000 tour by the reformed SAIGON KICK. The band were back out on the road in the summer of 2001 forming part of the 46 date 'Voices Of Metal' tour alongside VINCE NEIL, VIXEN and STEPHEN PEARCY'S RATT. Blas Elias would grace the big screen in the fall of 2001 playing the drummer of fictitious band BLOOD POLLUTION in the Mark Wahlberg movie 'Rock Star'. SLAUGHTER's tenacity and fan support could be evidenced when, during 2001, the band received more MTV airings than in the previous five years. The band would be on the road once more as part of the WHITESNAKE headed 'Rock Never Stops' US summer tour alongside WARRANT and KIP WINGER. Fans of the VINNIE VINCENT INVASION band were in for a double treat in 2003 as both albums were re-issued and Bobby Rock united with his former band mates Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum drumming as guest for SLAUGHTER's 'Rock Never Stops' dates.
Mark Slaughter would donate vocal tracks to a version of the KISS classic 'Cold Gin' for a tribute album 'Spin The Bottle' in 2004 and would also partner with guitarist DOUG ALDRICH on the AC/DC track 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' included on the Rufftown Records tribute 'We Salute You'. In January 2005 The singer also lent vocals to a version of 'I'm Not Talking' included on the MICHAEL SCHENKER 'Heavy Hitters' covers album. Bobby Rock joined New York's CARNIVAL OF SOULS in February.
In January 2006 it was learned that Mark Slaughter had contributed guest vocals to Christian Rock project LIBERTY N' JUSTICE's album 'Soundtrack Of A Soul', sharing vocals on the track 'Thy Will Be Done' with TRIXTER's Pete Loran. Still active on the live front, SLAUGHTER's 2006 US shows found ex-SKID ROW man Tim Diduro manning the drums.
Mark Slaughter featured on the VAN HALEN song 'I'm The One' included on the tribute album '80s Metal Tribute To Van Halen' released by Deadline Records in September 2006. On February 3rd 2007 Slaughter, together with Matthew and Gunnar Nelson of NELSON, ERIC MARTIN of MR. BIG, JANI LANE of WARRANT and KELLY KEAGY of NIGHT RANGER, performed under the SCRAP METAL banner for an MTV filmed concert at the Mohegan Sun Hotel & Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. In March both Dana Strum and Jeff Blando toured Australia as part of VINCE NEIL's band.
A stripped down acoustic version of 'Up All Night' was contributed to the 'VH1 Metal Mania Stripped Volume 3' compilation album issued through Sidewinder Music in March 2007. That July the band appeared at a once in a lifetime gathering of 80s Rock acts dubbed 'Rocklahoma', a three-day outdoor festival held in Pryor, Oklahoma, sharing the billing with RATT, VINCE NEIL, WARRANT, POISON, QUIET RIOT, WINGER, DOKKEN, JACKYL, FASTER PUSSYCAT, ENUFF Z'NUFF, STEELHEART, 36 INCHES, Y&T, FIREHOUSE, BULLETBOYS, BANG TANGO and GREAT WHITE.
