NELSON

Biography

Identical twins Gunnar and Matthew Nelson had quite a showbiz tradition to uphold when they burst onto the Rock scene in 1990. Grandsons of Ozzie and Harriet (America's most popular TV soap of the 50's and 60's) and sons of the late rock n' roller Ricky Nelson, certainly made an impression. The duo would quickly be dubbed the 'Timotei Twins' by 'Kerrang!' writer Alison Joy.

The blonde duo made their first public performances in the music sphere with a mid 80's Pop trio titled THE NELSONS. With the death of their father in a plane crash in 1985 this tragic event spurred the siblings on to a harder attitude to their music and by 1987 THE NELSONS (retaining only the services of rhythm guitarist Joey Cathcart) had evolved into simply NELSON.

Early line-ups of NELSON featured former DIO guitarist Vivian Campbell, before the Irishman joined DEF LEPPARD, and ex-UFO drummer Andy Parker. The twins would soon settle on Bobby Rock (ex VINNIE VINCENT INVASION, NITRO and SKULL) at the drum stool alongside Cathcart, Australian guitarist Brett Garsed. Also assisting was keyboard player Paul Mirkovich, the man having recorded and toured with CHER, EDDIE MONEY, BELINDA CARLISLE and Soul star JEFFREY OSBORNE and played in an Alternative outfit called IN VITRO.

The Nelson twins were prevented from officially appearing on the soundtrack album to the 'Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure' movie due to Geffen refusing to allow the brothers to be heard on another label's (A&M) project. In the end the song 'Two Heads Are Better Than One', was recorded using an overdubbed vocal from ex-PALADIN and PLAYER singer PETE BECKETT and credited to the mysterious POWERTOOLS, a handle inspired by a club in Los Angeles boasting the same name. The twins toured America on the back of 'After The Rain's' success with HOUSE OF LORDS and then ENUFF Z' NUFF opening. Meantime, Paul Mirkovich went on to join WHITESNAKE.

Although the band were never to tour outside America a promotion visit to Britain caught the attention of the media in a big way, during which time the 'Timotei Twins' nickname was first coined. It was something that irritated the duo at first until they saw the funny side for themselves. They still presented the offending Ms. Joy with a pink sex aid and the message 'Don't Chip Your Teeth' for good measure!!

A video for the 'After The Rain' single featured the Nelson brothers' elder sister Tracy as the lead character's mother. Having successfully beaten cancer, Tracy landed a co-starring role as the intrepid nun Sister Steve alongside ex 'Happy Days' star Tom Boswell in 'The Father Dowling Mysteries'.

The second NELSON album was eventually released in 1995, although it wasn't the original Hard Rock concept album the group had started work on once the 'After The Rain' tour had been completed, much to the disappointment of those expecting a heavier version of that debut record. Contributors were ex-AIRPLAY and IRONHORSE drummer Mike Baird, CARS guitarist Elliott Easton and TOTO keyboard player Steve Porcaro.

The 'Imaginator' album eventually surfaced in Japan in late 1996. The record saw studio assistance from ex-ROUGH CUTT members Amir Derakh and Matt Thorne. A brand new NELSON album, 'The Silence Is Broken', was released in Japan in early 1998. MARILYN MARTIN adds backing vocals to 1999's 'Life'. NELSON united with PETER FRAMPTON and STYX for Summer North American tour dates commencing May 6th 2004.

An August 2004 Japanese release, simply entitled 'Greatest Hits', comprised re-recorded versions of the band's earler radio hits. During 2005 former NELSON keyboard player Paul Mirkovich came to international recognition as leader of the house band behind the 'Rockstar INXS' TV series.

On February 3rd 2007 Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, together with JANI LANE of WARRANT, Mark Slaughter of SLAUGHTER, KELLY KEAGY of NIGHT RANGER and ERIC MARTIN from MR. BIG, performed under the SCRAP METAL banner for an MTV filmed concert at the Mohegan Sun Hotel & Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

In July 2009 it was learned the twins had signed with Italian imprint Frontiers Records for a fresh studio album 'Lightning Strikes Twice'. The band unit comprised drummer Bobby Rock, guitarist Neil Zaza and keyboard player Gary Corbett.
