Biography
ANGEL CORPSE was founded in Kansas City during late 1995 by guitarist Gene Palubicki and erstwhile ORDER FROM CHAOS vocalist / bassist Pete Helmkamp. The duo pulled in drummer John Longstreth for a 1995 demo 'Goats To Azazael', which secured a deal with the French Black Metal label Osmose Productions. The band's debut album 'Hammer Of The Gods' secured favourable reviews and the band drafted second guitarist Bill Taylor for live work supporting IMPALED NAZARENE in Europe. These dates delivered the 'Nuclear Hell' EP recorded live in France. A further EP 'Wolflust', including a re-recorded title track as well as versions of IRON MAIDEN's 'Genghis Khan', KREATOR's 'Pleasure To Kill' and POSSESSED's 'Burning In Hell', ensued as ANGEL CORPSE put in a showing at the Milwaukee Metalfest.
Second album 'Exterminate' was issued in February 1998 with Longstreth, going on to successively join ORIGIN, SKINLESS and then EXHUMED, being substituted by former ACHERON and AURORA BOREALIS drummer Tony Laureano. ANGEL CORPSE got to grips with touring again with their inclusion on the touring European festival roster for 'No Mercy II' alongside CANNIBAL CORPSE, OBITUARY, MARDUK, GOD DETHRONED and IMMORTAL. With these shows complete ANGEL CORPSE hooked up with IMMORTAL again for a further 25 European dates. Back in America the band went straight back onto the road guesting for CANNIBAL CORPSE for a further 55 dates.
The act's third album 'The Inexorable', released in Europe via Osmose Productions and in America through Olympic Recordings, was promoted with American shows with support from INCANTATION and Brazilians KRISIUN kicking off in January 1999. On the road in Europe during October of 1999, the group joined a heavyweight billing comprising MARDUK, DEFLESHED, AETERNUS and CANNIBAL CORPSE.
ANGEL CORPSE added Chuck Keller, previously with ORDER FROM CHAOS. The band cut their version of 'Eat Me Alive' for the 1999 JUDAS PRIEST tribute album 'Hell Bent For Metal' and issued a split EP with Australia's MATIRE. The 'Winds Of Desecration' EP would include a newly recorded take of 'When Abyss Winds Return', the JUDAS PRIEST 'Eat Me Alive' cover and versions of MORBID ANGEL's 'Demon Seed', SLAYER's 'Kill Again' and SARCOFAGO's 'Desecration Of Virgin'.
In March of 2000 Bill Taylor rejoined as the band embarked on a further ruin of American dates, this time billed with SATYRICON and KRISIUN. However, mid way through the tour Helmkamp decided to leave, putting in his last show in Phoenix. The frontman had been persuaded to depart following a stabbing incident where his wife had been injured trying to protect herself. The band persevered to the last show by using KRISIUN's Alex Carmago as a temporary stand in but with the tour's completion ANGEL CORPSE duly disbanded.
Osmose Productions posthumously issued the 'Iron, Blood And Blasphemy' collection in 2001, combining the 'Winds Of Desecration', 'Nuclear Hell' and 'Wolflust' EPs, the 'Goats To Azazael' demo sessions together with unreleased live material recorded in Italy during 1998.
Helmkamp, besides starting his own T shirt printing company Vomit Productions, would soon return with a fresh venture entitled TERROR ORGAN weilding the 2001 opus 'Buzzbomb : Vergeltungswaffe Mhz 28'. He would join Canadians REVENGE, a band founded by ex-CONQUEROR drummer J. Read, in June of 2002.
During 2004 ANGEL CORPSE would donate their rendition of 'Burning In Hell' to the 'Seven Gates Of Horror' tribute album assembled by the Dutch Karmaggedon Media label in homage to pioneering Bay Area Thrash act POSSESSED. During that May ex-drummer John Longstreth was ensconced in Metalcore outfit THE RED CHORD before journeying on to DYING FETUS then the reformed DIM MAK.
Tony Laureano joined up with premier Norwegian Black Metal band DIMMU BORGIR for live work in 2005. That August, Laureano engaged with musicians from SPIRAL ARCHITECT, SATYRICON and LUNARIS to record tracks for a new "savagely innovative" Black Metal project. The drummer temporarily joined up with Metalcore band THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER for dates in Japan and South Korea.
Having drafted new drummer Gina Ambrosio, ANGEL CORPSE started on tracking new material in August 2006 for the album 'Of Lucifer And Lightning'. However, Ambrosio's tenure would prove fleeting as later that same month the group was once again auditioning for drummers.
However, Palubicki and Ambrosio unveiled a new side project in late 2006, BLASPHEMIC CRUELTY also involving ARES KINGDOM vocalist / bassist Alex Blume. An album, entitled 'The Devil's Mayhem', was prepared for 2007 issue.
ANGEL CORPSE returned to the North American touring circuit in early May 2007, uniting with WATAIN, NEGATIVE PLANE, GRAVEWÜRM and NACHTMYSTIUM for the "Antichrist Vanguard" tour. Manning the drums would be ex-CATTLE DECAPITATION man J.R. Daniels. The album 'Of Lucifer And Lightning' saw release in June 2008.
ANGEL CORPSE officially called it quits in April 2009, the group saying in a statement, "Due to musical differences amongst its members, it has been decided with much consideration to end ANGEL CORPSE." Guitarist Gene Palubicki swiftly announced the formation of PERDITION TEMPLE.
