Biography
MELDRUM was formed by ex-WARGOD and PHANTOM BLUE guitarist Michelle Meldrum upon her relocation to Stockholm, Sweden after marrying ex-EUROPE guitarist JOHN NORUM. With a sound more akin to traditional European Metal, MELDRUM were offering a demo for sale during the early part of 1998. The act's line up at this juncture comprised Meldrum, vocalist Janet Simmonds, ex-PITBULL bassist Frida Stahl and drummer Asa Persson.
MELDRUM would undergo a line up shift bringing in singer Moa Holmsten and drummer Fredrik Haake, the latter a New York veteran of GILES and GOD IS MY CO-PILOT. An album entitled 'Loaded Mental Cannon' arrived in October 2001 on the Record Heaven label. MELDRUM would land the valuable support to MOTÖRHEAD's November 2002 Scandinavian dates. April 2003 would find the band on the road in North America billed alongside BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and NASHVILLE PUSSY. European shows that November had the band opening for DANZIG. Increased activity in the studio would also produce a cover of MOT?RHEAD's 'The Chase Is Better Than The Catch' for use on a tribute album.
In early 2004 MELDRUM, still unsigned by that point, cut further covers for use on tribute albums with renditions of MOTÖRHEAD's 'No Class' and CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL's 'I Put A Spell On You'. That December the band acted as openers for the MOTÖRHEAD and SEPULTURA Scandinavian tour. MELDRUM toured North America as support to BLACK LABEL SOCIETY throughout March and April of 2005. The band then secured the opening slot to BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's European dates in May and June.
Moa Holmsten made her presence felt as part of the MOTÖRHEAD 30th anniversary celebrations, guesting with the band onstage at the London Astoria for a take on 'Killed By Death', filmed for DVD, and also acting out a part in the promotional video for 'Whorehouse Blues'. MELDRUM opened for MOT?RHEAD once again on a run of US House Of Blues dates in March 2006 before heading back into the studio with producer Toby Wright.
New album recordings featured MOTÖRHEAD frontman Lemmy Kilmister, donating lead vocals and lyrics on the song 'Miss Me When I'm Gone', STRAPPING YOUNG LAD drummer Gene Hoglan plus PHANTOM BLUE drummer Linda McDonald.
For MELDRUM's performance at the 'Black Tooth Bash' tribute to late PANTERA / DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott on January 20th 2007 held at the Hilton Pacific Ballroom in Anaheim, California they were joined by STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and ex-DARK ANGEL drummer Gene Hoglan. MELDRUM signed to Italian label Frontiers Records in March for the album 'Blowin' Up The Machine'.
On Sunday, May 18th 2008 Michelle Meldrum was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California in critical condition. Three days later, Wednesday, May 21st, she passed away as a result of a cystic growth on her brain that had restricted oxygen and blood flow to her brain. Meldrum had just completed writing and recording the band's latest album with drummer Gene Hoglan, along with the new line-up of vocalist Michele Madden and WARFACE bassist Laura Christine. The surviving band members planned to release the album in tribute to their fallen band-mate. Meldrum, 39, was survived by her parents and three year old son, Jake Thomas.
In November the band announced they had completed recording of the album 'Lifer' in honour of Michelle Meldrum.
A Michelle Meldrum memorial show was held at the Whisky A-Go Go in Hollywood, California on 24th May 2009. Performing bands included MELDRUM with Gene Hoglan, LIZZY BORDEN, a PHANTOM BLUE reunion and THE IRON MAIDENS. A stellar guest cast comprised Lemmy Kilmister of MOTÖRHEAD, Rocky George of FISHBONE and SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, Nick Oliveri from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and MONDO GENERATOR, Jason McMaster of WATCHTOWER and DANGEROUS TOYS, John Norum of EUROPE and DOKKEN, Chuck Wright of QUIET RIOT and Phil Varone from SAIGON KICK and SKID ROW.
The surviving members of MELDRUM scheduled US West Coast dates in September.
