Biography

Winthrop, Massachusetts act UNEARTH, established during 1998, made their first impressions on the Metalcore scene with the May 1999 EP 'The Fall Of Man', their arrival swiftly placing them as part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Guitarist Buz McGrath, drummer Mike Rudberg, and bassist Chris Rybicki had previously operated as POINT 04. They would form up with guitarist Ken Susi and singer Trevor Phipps to forge UNEARTH.

Signing to Eulogy Records the band delivered the album 'The Stings Of Conscience' in January 2001. UNEARTH, with drummer Mike Rudberg being superseded by Mike Justain of THE RED CHORD repute, signed to Metal Blade Records in October 2003. The band recorded their Metal Blade Records debut, 'The Oncoming Storm', at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz acting as producer.

The band engaged in nationwide MTV's 'Headbangers Ball' US touring allied with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, SHADOWS FALL and LAMB OF GOD later that same month. Guitarist Ken Susi also made time to fire up BURN YOUR WISHES, an extracurricular band activity comprising band producer Adam Dutkiewicz on guitar, THE ACACIA STRAIN bass player Karrie Whitfield and PICTURES OF GABRIEL man Paul DeBenedictis on drums. The band released a split EP with Quebec City's THE AWARD through on Milk And Cookies Records.

Ken Susi and fellow guitarist Buzz McGrath would also be operational on the club covers circuit in early 2004 as LATE NIGHT CRÜE, a MÖTLEY CRÜE tribute band also featuring vocalist Brian Fair of SHADOWS FALL, bassist Mike D'Antonio from KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and SEEMLESS drummer Derek Kerswill.

The band stepped up a few gears on the touring front in the Summer of 2004, joining the billing for the DAMAGEPLAN, DROWNING POOL and HATEBREED co-headlined 'Headbangers Ball' tour in March and April followed by an inclusion on the July / August 'Ozzfest' events. UNEARTH shared the second stage alongside SLIPKNOT, ATREYU, LAMB OF GOD, EVERY TIME I DIE, HATEBREED, LACUNA COIL and BLEEDING THROUGH. A run of Canadian gigs in June saw the band acting as openers to BURNT BY THE SUN. In July the 'The Oncoming Storm' album shifted 13,285 copies in its first week of release to enter the US Billboard charts at an impressive no. 105. European 'Eastpak Resistance' shows in November, commencing on the 5th in Geneva, Switzerland, saw the band hooking up with a diverse raft of bands on a single package billing including WALLS OF JERICHO, 7 SECONDS, SLAPSHOT, THE BONES, SICK OF IT ALL and RAMALLAH.

The band opened 2005 with an extensive round of US headline dates taking them through February and March partnered with ATREYU. Meantime, Metal Blade Records re-issued 'The Oncoming Storm', adding two newly recorded songs 'One Step Away' and 'The Charm'.

The Summer of 2005 found the group participating in the US 'Sounds of the Underground' touring extravaganza, a collaboration between independent labels Ferret Music, Prosthetic Records, Trustkill Records and Metal Blade Records. The mammoth billing for these shows saw the band sharing stages with CLUTCH, OPETH, POISON THE WELL, FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES, CHIMAIRA, NORMA JEAN, EVERY TIME I DIE, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THROWDOWN, HIGH ON FIRE, DEVILDRIVER, ALL THAT REMAINS, A LIFE ONCE LOST and GWAR. Regional additions included MADBALL and TERROR, splitting the East and West portions of the tour respectively, THE RED CHORD on the East Coast, FEAR BEFORE THE MARCH OF FLAMES in the Midwest and Southeast and HIMSA for Western gigs. European dates throughout June had the band unified with LAMB OF GOD, EVERY TIME I DIE and CALIBAN. The band also put in appearances at the 'Rock Am Ring' and 'Rock Im Ring' festivals in Germany plus the UK 'Download' event. Returning to the USA, September headliners saw THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, ZAO and A LIFE ONCE LOST as support before UNEARTH formed up a three band billing with SLIPKNOT and AS I LAY DYING for Autumn gigs. Amidst all this activity Ken Susi found time to produce an EP, 'Still Monologue', for Cincinnati, Ohio Metalcore band A PRESENT DAY NIGHTMARE.

A retrospective release, 'Our Days Of Eulogy' released in November, proved a boon to ardent collectors comprising live tracks recorded at The Downtown in Long Island, New York dating to 2004, the 'Above The Fall Of Man' EP and 'Endless' EP. Ken Susi acted as producer for Boston's BURN IN SILENCE 'Angel Maker' album in December.

UNEARTH utilised Studio X in Seattle with producer Terry Date in March 2006 to cut a new album. Crossing the Atlantic, the band alongside CHIMAIRA, MADBALL, TERROR, ALL THAT REMAINS and MANNTIS teamed up for the European edition of the 'Sounds of the Underground' tour, commencing May 10th in Manchester, England.

'Ozzfest' loomed for the 2006 summer touring season, the group hitting Canada as a warm up in June, flanking ALL THAT REMAINS, THE RED CHORD, A LIFE ONCE LOST, WALLS OF JERICHO and IF HOPE DIES, before sharing the festival stages with OZZY OSBOURNE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, HATEBREED, LACUNA COIL, DISTURBED, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, ATREYU, BLEEDING THROUGH, NORMA JEAN, A LIFE ONCE LOST, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THE RED CHORD, FULL BLOWN CHAOS, WALLS OF JERICHO, ALL THAT REMAINS and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.

'In The Eyes Of Fire' sold over 22,000 copies in its first week of release to land at number 35 on the US album charts. The group formed up another package tour, the 'Sanctity Of Brothers' expedition ranking them alongside TERROR, THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD, ANIMOSITY and BLEEDING THROUGH in September.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, LAMB OF GOD and UNEARTH joined forces for an Australian tour in October. The band teamed up with HATEBREED and FULL BLOWN CHAOS for a European tour, hitting Germany, Denmark, Holland, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria the UK and Belgium, in November. The band contributed their version of 'Clobberin' Time/What's Going On' to the SICK OF IT ALL tribute album 'Our Impact Will Be Felt' assembled by Abacus Recordings for January 2007 release.

UNEARTH scheduled another round of British dates in March, headlining over JOB FOR A COWBOY, DESPISED ICON and DAATH. 'The March' album, recorded at Massachusetts' System Recording and Zing studios with producer Adam Dutkiewicz, was released in North America on 14th October via Metal Blade Records. A limited European-exclusive edition included a bonus track called 'Our Callous Skin'. UNEARTH sold just under 11,000 copies of 'The March', in the United States in its first week of release to debut at no. 45 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Emil Werstler of DAATH substituted for Buz McGrath for US tour dates in January 2009 EMMURE, IMPENDING DOOM and BORN OF OSIRIS. The band was further afflicted with unscheduled changes in May when, due to a family emergency, bassist John Maggard had to fly home from tour. Filling in for him on the band's run with TESTAMENT and LAZARUS A.D. would be former SINCE THE FLOOD guitarist Dave Stauble.

UNEARTH six-stringer Buz McGrath filled in for LAMB OF GOD guitarist Mark Morton on European summer dates as his wife was expecting a baby.
