Biography
Singer / songwriter BILLY SQUIER shot to prominence in America during the early eighties on the back of a string of platinum albums. The guitarist had cut his teeth with THE SIDEWINDERS, an act he dissolved due to arguments about musical direction and forged PIPER, the latter act going on to release two albums. So high was Capitol's optimism for the guitarist that Mack, the producer most closely associated with QUEEN, was drafted in for the 'Don't Say No' album.
BILLY SQUIER and Capitol had a major falling out over the song 'The Stroke', the record company objecting vehemently to the line "Stroke me, stroke me". Capitol's grievance with the track was so great that initially they did not want it on the album. Indeed, 'The Stroke' was at Capitol's insistence not serviced to major radio stations such were their reservations. Needless to say 'The Stroke' crossed over from late night radio onto the mainstream stations and became BILLY SQUIER's biggest hit.
BILLY SQUIER, complete with touring band that included ex-URIAH HEEP and RAINBOW bassist Mark Clarke, guitarist Cary Sharaf, keyboard player Alan St. Jon and drummer Bobby Chouinard, hit the road in no uncertain terms. The band covered Australia, America and Canada over a ten month trek that pushed the album into the top ten in America for over six months shifting a healthy two million albums in the process. The band also managed a foray into Britain supporting WHITESNAKE also landing a position at the prestigious 1981 Reading Festival.
BILLY SQUIER assembled a touring band of Jeff Golub on guitar, ex CLEAR LIGHT / RIFF RAFF / DOORS bassist Doug Lubahn (whose song writing prowess had been established by his co-write credit on PAT BENATAR's hit 'Treat Me Right') whilst still retaining the services of St. Jon and Chouinard. Lubahn later teamed up with TED NUGENT.
The resulting 1982 album 'Emotions In Motion' gave ample evidence of BILLY SQUIER's burgeoning status it not only coming complete with a production job by Mack once more but was also afforded the rare honour of coming wrapped in an album sleeve designed by sixties pop art icon David Warhol.
BILLY SQUIER's status also had the man pushing his creative energies into other directions and the same year BILLY SQUIER penned the track 'Fast Times' for the movie soundtrack of the same name and also had one of his cuts chosen for the soundtrack to the revamped sci-fi classic 'Metropolis'.
Lubahn quit Squier's band in 1986 and was originally replaced by T.M. STEVENS, who recorded the 'Enough Is Enough' album before quickly departing almost as quickly as he'd arrived in order to join THE PRETENDERS. In his stead came ex-GOOD RATS man Shuyler Deale, who had been playing with the New York based Power Metal trio Z-BOY alongside guitarist Joey Balin.
The 'Enough Is Enough' album actually features guest vocals from QUEEN's FREDDIE MERCURY on 'Love Is A Hero' and he also bags a co-writing credit on 'Lady With A Tenor Sax'. The 1996 live release is culled from a 1983 Worcester, Massachusetts concert radio recording.
Squier opted not to tour to support 'Tell The Truth' and left the music business to concentrate on writing screenplays. St. Jon was later to appear sessioning for many other artists including STYX guitarist TOMMY SHAW's 'Ambition' album. German rockers BONFIRE covered 'The Stroke' for their 1991 'Knockout' album.
2006 saw Billy back on the road, touring across the USA as part of RINGO STARR's "All Star" band alongside EDGAR WINTER and ROD ARGENT.
