Biography

An ultra ponderous Sludge Doom outfit out of New England fuelled by utter lyrical despondency. GRIEF was formulated during 1991 by erstwhile DISRUPT guitarist Terry Savastano and drummer Randy Odierno, the latter switching over to bass. However, Odierno did not stay the course and would up with Death Metal act BANE OF EXISTENCE.

The band made their entrance with an eponymous 7” single on their own Grievance label, following this up with the 'Dismal' 12”. Thereafter a whole slew of shared singles ensued witnessing GRIEF allied with DYSTOPIA, 16, SOILENT GREEN, SUPPRESSION and Japanese Stoners CORRUPTED.

1994's 'Come To Grief' album would emerge on the German Century Media label before GRIEF switched to the Pessimiser concern of fan Chris Elder for future outings. During 1995 a compilation album 'He Is No Good To Me Dead' would include rare GRIEF demos, tracks from DISRUPT as well as CHICKEN CHEST AND THE BIRD BOYS, the side venture of Hayward and DISRUPT guitarist Jay.

The drum stool position within GRIEF would remain fluid. Both Peter Cassin of THE McVEIGHS and Chuck Conlan, the latter appearing on the 2000 album 'And Man Will Become The Hunted', held terms but former drummer Rick Johnson would rejoin during January of 2000.

There was talk of the band switching titles to that of EMPTY but GRIEF would finally draw to a halt in 2001 with Hayward, Savastano and Harrison vowing to create a fresh project. Both Savastano and Hayward also operate in the Punk act THE SQWAGS. The Southern Lord label collected together a slew of split single tracks and unreleased GRIEF songs to form up the posthumous 'Turbulent Times' album during 2002.

Jeff Hayward made a return in late 2003 with an extreme Metal band entitled NOOSEBOMB, this unit comprising DISRUPT bassist Randy Odierno and BANE OF EXISTENCE drummer Mike Butkiewicz. Hayward's new group debuted with the 'Brain Food For The Braindead' album. Rumours in early 2005 suggested a GRIEF reunion was on the horizon and in February it was confirmed an appearance was scheduled at the 'New England Grind and Doom Fest' on 17th July at the Emerald Hall in Braintree, Massachusetts.
