Biography
Boston's CONVERGE, often genre as Mathcore, readily mix a blistering combination of Hardcore, Punk and Metal and have been recognised as leaders in their field since the dawn of their debut 1991 demo. The band was created at school by a 13 year old lead vocalist Jacob Bannon with friend and guitarist Kurt Ballou. A now extremely scarce EP followed upfront of the inaugural full length album 'Halo In A Haystack'.
In 1995 the 'Unloved And Weeded Out' EP emerged and secured a deal with Equal Vision Records for a re-release of the 'Petitioning The Empty Sky' album. 'When Forever Comes Crashing', produced by Steve Austin of TODAY IS THE DAY, preceded a split album for Relapse in alliance with noise terrorists AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED. During this period Ballou could also be seen on the live circuit with his alter ego act KID KILOWATT, a group founded in union with CAVE IN members.
The band undertook a further split album affair, released on Bannon's own Deathwish Inc. label, sharing space on 'Deeper The Wound' with Japanese act HELLCHILD. Included would be a cover version of DEPECHE MODE's 'Clean'. Long standing drummer Damon Belldorado would decamp to be replaced by John DiGeorgio. However, this latest recruit would also depart shortly after.
2001's 'Jane Doe', produced by Matthew Ellard, would see the drum stool occupied by Ben Koller, a member of Ballou's extracurricular act BLUE/GREEN HEAD. Dalbec made his exit, performing his last show with the band at the September 8th 'Skatefest 2001' festival, in order to concentrate fully on his other act BANE. CONVERGE, with Ballou now taking onboard all guitar duties, would tour America with AMERICAN NIGHTMARE in late 2001.
Newton also divides his time with OLD MAN GLOOM debuting in January 2000 with the 'Meditations In B' record. The two 2001 OLD MAN GLOOM albums both seeing Newton acting as guitarist alongside colleagues Caleb Scofield of CAVE IN on bass and ISIS frontman Aaron Turner.
Bannon and Ballou also operate side project SUPERMACHINER in collusion with Seth Bannon and Ryan Parker. An album, 'The Rise Of The Great Machine, arrived in 2001. Jacob Bannon also took time out to act as guest lead vocalist on an EP, produced by Kurt Ballou, from RAMALLAH during 2002. The frontman would then announce an all new venture entitled THE BLOOD OF THINE ENEMIES, this unit subsequently adopting the title DEATH LOVER to issue two albums in parallel 'Death' and 'Love'.
CONVERGE allied themselves with CAVE IN and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME for a mammoth series of US dates in the Fall of 2004. That year Newton forged an all new side project entitled DOOMRIDERS in alliance with members of POP NARCOTIC and THERE WERE WIRES. Signing to Deathwish Inc. this new venture recorded an album with CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou at the production helm.
In February 2005 the band partnered with ISIS and MASTODON for the 'Extreme The Dojo' tour of Japan. That same year Nate Newton guested on the 'Aeolian' album from Berlin Ambient Doom act THE OCEAN. CONVERGE engaged with TERROR, CURSED and MARE for the Canadian 'Exclaim! Aggressive Tendencies' gigs in September. US shows in November would see RINGWORM as support before MUNICIPAL WASTE took over opening duties.
CONVERGE commenced tracking a self-produced album, 'No Heroes', in June 2006. US touring in September saw the band sharing stages with THE BRONX and MASTODON. Throughout November the group toured the USA aligned with KYLESA, SOME GIRLS and MODERN LIFE IS WAR. 'No Heroes' sold just under 5,000 copies in the United States during its first week of sale to land at number 151 on The Billboard album chart.
CONVERGE teamed up with MASTODON and PRIESTESS for a U.S. tour beginning in early February 2007.
MASTODON teamed up with DETHKLOK, plus CONVERGE and HIGH ON FIRE, for a co-headlining tour in October and November 2009. The 34 date trek kicked off 2nd October at the Roseland Theater in Portland.
